Dehradun: The efforts to expand railway connectivity in Uttarakhand’s mountainous regions are gaining momentum following a key meeting between Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami and Railway Board Chairman Satish Kumar, along with senior officials.
During the discussions, both sides emphasized the need to extend rail connectivity into remote hill areas to boost development, improve accessibility, and promote tourism in the state.
Chief Minister Dhami stressed that expanding rail networks in the Himalayan region would significantly accelerate economic growth and tourism activities.
Focus on Key Rail Projects in Uttarakhand
Rishikesh–Karnaprayag Railway Line Targeted for 2028 Completion
One of the major highlights of the meeting was the progress review of the under-construction Rishikesh–Karnaprayag Railway Project.
The project is now targeted for completion by December 2028. The Chief Minister stated that this rail line will greatly enhance pilgrimage and tourism connectivity in the region, making travel easier and safer for devotees and tourists.
Proposed Rishikesh–Uttarkashi Railway Line Gains Attention
The proposed Rishikesh–Uttarkashi Railway Line was also discussed in detail. The state government has requested approval for the Detailed Project Report (DPR) based on the final survey and has urged the Centre to declare it a national project.
The state has also demanded that 100% funding for the project be borne by the Central Government due to its strategic and developmental importance.

Expansion of Rail Connectivity in Kumaon Region
Tanakpur–Bageshwar Rail Project Under Review
The meeting also covered the proposed Tanakpur–Bageshwar Railway Project in the Kumaon region. Officials confirmed that its survey and DPR have already been prepared.
The Chief Secretary requested swift approval of the DPR to expedite the project.
Additional Proposed Rail Lines
Chief Minister Dhami also highlighted future requirements for:
- Karnaprayag–Bageshwar railway line
- Kichha–Khatima railway line
He emphasized that these projects will be crucial for long-term regional connectivity and development.
Upgradation and Doubling of Rail Lines
Haridwar–Dehradun Rail Line Modernization
Plans for the doubling of the Haridwar–Motichur–Raiwala rail line were discussed in detail. The Railway Board Chairman confirmed that the first phase will include doubling from Haridwar to Motichur.
Land encroachment issues were identified as a major challenge, and the state assured full cooperation for smooth execution.
A survey for doubling the Raiwala–Dehradun section has also been directed by the DRM of Northern Railway. The state government has requested completion of the survey before Kumbh 2033 to ensure better crowd management during the event.
Development of Modern Railway Stations
Chief Minister Dhami also emphasized the need to develop key railway stations including:
- Dehradun
- Haridwar
- Rishikesh
- Roorkee
- Haldwani
- Kathgodam
- Ramnagar
- Tanakpur
These stations are planned to be upgraded as model stations with modern passenger amenities.
The Railway Board Chairman informed that Dehradun railway station is being developed as a model station, while Harrawala station is being designed to meet requirements for the next 25 years.
Approval of Meerut–Rishikesh RRTS Corridor
A major development discussed in the meeting was the in-principle approval of the Meerut–Rishikesh RRTS Corridor.
The 78-km alignment includes a proposed terminal near Lakshman Jhula in Rishikesh and an extension up to Har Ki Pauri in Haridwar. The Detailed Project Report (DPR) for this corridor is currently under preparation.
The meeting between Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami and Railway Board Chairman Satish Kumar marks a significant step toward transforming Uttarakhand’s rail infrastructure. With multiple projects in different stages of planning and execution, the state is moving toward improved connectivity, better tourism access, and stronger regional development.
