New Delhi: Western Coalfields Limited (WCL) has commenced mechanical auger sampling operations at two major coal-loading locations in Maharashtra, marking a significant step towards improving transparency, scientific accuracy and quality assurance in coal sampling.
The new mechanised sampling system has been introduced at HLOC Siding in Chandrapur and Saoner BG Siding in Nagpur. The initiative is aimed at making the coal sampling process more transparent and scientifically robust while strengthening consumer confidence in coal quality assessment.
Mechanical Auger Sampling Begins at Two WCL Locations
The mechanical auger sampling operations were launched at two different locations during September 2026:
HLOC Siding, Chandrapur – September 24
The first operation was carried out at HLOC Siding, Chandrapur, on September 24, 2026.

- Significance: First-ever mechanical auger sampling initiative of its kind in Coal India at an OHE siding
The launch at HLOC Siding marks an important technological development in the mechanisation of coal sampling and quality assessment.
Saoner BG Siding, Nagpur – September 26
Mechanical auger sampling was subsequently commenced at Saoner BG Siding, Nagpur, on September 26, 2026.

- Destination: Khaperkheda
- Significance: Second WCL location where mechanical auger sampling operations have successfully started
The deployment at Saoner further expands the use of mechanised sampling technology across WCL’s coal-loading operations.

Initiative to Enhance Transparency in Coal Sampling
The mechanical auger sampling operations have been executed by M/s IGI and are intended to strengthen WCL’s quality assurance framework.
Mechanised sampling can help establish a more systematic and transparent process for collecting coal samples from rakes. The initiative is expected to improve scientific accuracy in sampling while providing greater confidence to consumers and other stakeholders regarding coal quality assessment.
The introduction of the system also represents a move towards greater use of technology in WCL’s quality-control processes.

The technological advancement has been carried out under the leadership of WCL CMD Dr. Hemant Sharad Pande.

The coordinated efforts of the management, quality-control teams and field personnel enabled the mechanical auger sampling operations to be introduced successfully at the two locations.
Mechanical Sampling to Strengthen Quality Assurance
The introduction of mechanical auger sampling at HLOC Siding and Saoner BG Siding is expected to strengthen WCL’s overall approach towards quality assurance, transparency and scientific coal sampling.
With the deployment of mechanised technology, WCL aims to further improve the reliability of its sampling practices and build stronger confidence among coal consumers and stakeholders.
The initiative also marks another step towards technological advancement in coal-handling and quality-control operations within WCL.
