Lucknow: Senior Uttar Pradesh cadre IPS officer Amarendra Singh Sengar (IPS:1995:UP) is set to receive an early promotion to the rank of Director General (DG) in the Uttar Pradesh Police following the appointment of Sujeet Pandey (IPS:1994:UP) as Director of the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Police Academy (SVPNPA), Hyderabad.
Pandey formally assumed charge at the country’s premier police training institution on July 15, 2026, creating a vacancy in the DG rank within the Uttar Pradesh Police. The development has paved the way for Sengar’s promotion ahead of his originally scheduled elevation.
Promotion Advanced by More Than a Month
Amarendra Singh Sengar, currently serving as Commissioner of Police, Lucknow, was initially expected to be promoted to the DG rank on August 30, 2026, after the retirement of Ashok Mutha Jain (IPS:1995:UP).
However, Sujeet Pandey’s appointment to the Centre altered the seniority dynamics.
The Uttar Pradesh government had relieved Pandey on July 10 to enable him to join his new assignment. With him now taking charge as Director of SVPNPA, a DG-level vacancy has become available, allowing the state government to process Sengar’s promotion earlier than anticipated.
Who is Amarendra Singh Sengar?
Amarendra Singh Sengar, also known as Amrendra Kumar Sengar, is a 1995-batch IPS officer of the Uttar Pradesh cadre and is regarded as one of the state’s most experienced police officers.
Born on January 1, 1970, in Chhapra, Bihar, Sengar holds a Master’s degree in Political Science. Over a career spanning more than three decades, he has served in several crucial operational, intelligence and leadership assignments in both the state and central governments.
Extensive Experience in State and Central Roles
Sengar has handled several high-profile assignments during his career.
At the Centre, he served as Officer on Special Duty (OSD) to the Union Home Minister between 2017 and 2019. During his central deputation, he also held senior positions as Inspector General in the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF).
Within Uttar Pradesh, he has served as:
- Police Commissioner, Lucknow (since June 2024)
- Additional Director General (Lucknow Zone)
- Inspector General (Law and Order)
- Inspector General, Varanasi Zone
He has also commanded Gorakhpur, Moradabad and Basti Ranges as Deputy Inspector General and served as SP/SSP in nine districts, giving him extensive field policing experience.
Expertise in Law Enforcement and Disaster Management
Throughout his career, Sengar has developed expertise across multiple policing domains, including law and order, intelligence gathering, public safety, CB-CID investigations and disaster response.
In 2022, he successfully completed the prestigious 62nd National Defence College (NDC) Course, further strengthening his strategic and administrative credentials.
His tenure as Lucknow Police Commissioner has focused on strengthening urban policing, technology-driven law enforcement and crime prevention in the state capital.
SVPNPA Appointment Creates Opportunity
The vacancy arose after Sujeet Pandey moved to Hyderabad to head the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Police Academy, India’s premier institution for training IPS officers.
With the Uttar Pradesh government relieving Pandey for central deputation earlier this month, Amarendra Singh Sengar is now expected to be elevated to the Director General rank, marking another milestone in his distinguished policing career.
The promotion is expected to be formalised through an official state government order shortly.
