In a significant shake-up of the Kolkata Police, the West Bengal government, led by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, has appointed decorated 1998 batch IPS officer Manoj Kumar Verma as the new Police Commissioner of Kolkata.
This decision comes in the wake of mounting criticism directed at former Commissioner Vineet Goyal, who faced backlash for his handling of the investigation into the tragic rape and murder of a 31-year-old trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital last month.
The announcement was made late Tuesday night, following an urgent meeting with protesting doctors who had expressed their concerns over the initial police response to the case. Goyal’s removal is part of a broader reshuffle that also includes the transfer of Director of Medical Education Kaustav Nayek, Deputy Commissioner of North Kolkata Abhishek Gupta, and Director of Health Services Debashish Haldar.
Manoj Kumar Verma: A Distinguished Career
Mr Verma was previously serving as the Additional Director General (ADGP) and Inspector-General of Police for Law and Order in West Bengal. His track record includes notable achievements in law enforcement, earning him a reputation for effective leadership in high-pressure situations.
Verma has been recognized with multiple awards, including the Police Medal for Meritorious Service (PMMS) in 2017, and the Chief Minister’s Police Medal in 2019 for his exemplary service as the Police Commissioner of Barrackpore. He has also held pivotal roles, such as ADG and IG of the Intelligence Bureau, showcasing his extensive experience in both law enforcement and intelligence operations.
Born on September 30, 1968, in Sawai Madhopur, Rajasthan, Verma’s journey into policing began with his successful completion of the UPSC exam, leading him to a career marked by commitment and accolades. His early work in West Midnapore, where he played a key role in curbing Maoist activities, garnered him significant praise and laid the foundation for his future roles.
Context of the Transition
The decision to appoint Verma follows a public outcry over the handling of the tragic case involving the young doctor, which has ignited protests across the city. Doctors have voiced their lack of confidence in the previous administration, particularly targeting Goyal for what they perceive as a failure to adequately address the crime and its aftermath.
During her meeting with the protesting doctors, Chief Minister Banerjee acknowledged the need for change, stating, “We have accommodated Goyal’s request for a transfer, as it became evident that trust was eroding. It’s imperative that we restore faith in the system.” She assured the medical community that the new leadership would bring a fresh perspective to the investigation and law enforcement in Kolkata.
The official order detailing these changes was issued promptly, with Manoj Verma stepping into his new role amidst hopes for a renewed approach to police transparency and efficiency in handling sensitive cases.
As Kolkata braces for this transition, the focus now shifts to how Verma will navigate the challenges ahead and restore public confidence in the city’s police force. The expectation is that his experience and proven track record will lead to a more responsive and effective police department, particularly in addressing the grievances that have sparked widespread protests.
