In Maharashtra’s Sangli village, digital detox programme is showing the mirror to the society and giving the lesson to all of us. As siren goes off at 7 pm every day, TV and mobile in every house goes silent and children start studying in this remote village.
2008 batch IRS officer Smita Singh shared a video of ‘Mohite Vadgaon’ of Sangli, which is getting much praise on social media. She tweeted, “Mohityanche Vadgaon in Sangli, Maharashtra is a smart village which practices digital detox everyday for 1.5 hours from all electronic gadgets. Kudos to wise & mindful village residents for such impactful community action!”
The ‘Project Siren’ was started in a Mohite Vadgaon but now five villages has adopted this practice. For over eight months, at the least half a dozen villages in Maharashtra’s Sangli district have been following this at sunset and nobody’s complaining.
A siren goes up, all mobiles are switched off in the village with a population of 3000. Children open their books and study. Some children go for group studies too. All the houses across the village quietens down in a minute. It is time for digital detoxification for the whole village. Elders too chat in hushed voices. Another siren goes off at 8.30pm to denote the end of the detox period. It is a routine followed even on Sundays.
