Nitish Kumar Will Be Bihar’s 10th Time CM After People Endorse His Two-Decade Journey of Reform and Stability

NDA’s sweeping Bihar win reaffirms Nitish Kumar’s enduring leadership, strong voter trust, and development-driven governance across the state

As counting day progressed in Bihar, what began as early momentum soon turned into an electoral avalanche for the National Democratic Alliance (NDA). The alliance stormed past the 200-seat mark in the 243-member Bihar Assembly, scripting one of its most decisive mandates in recent years. The sweeping verdict effectively wiped out the Mahagathbandhan and reinforced Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s position as the central figure of Bihar’s governance and development story.

NDA’s Early Momentum Turns Into a Historic Surge

Counting began at 8 a.m., and postal ballots immediately tilted the scales towards the NDA. Within hours, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)—which had pushed for equal seat-sharing with the JD(U)—opened up a notable lead, even outpacing the JD(U) across many constituencies. The alliance, powered by high voter turnout and a wave analysts describe as the ‘Nimo’ effect (Nitish Kumar + Narendra Modi), swept across key regions.

Meanwhile, the Mahagathbandhan crumbled. The RJD, which once emerged as the single-largest party, suffered significant losses, while the Congress struggled yet again, reinforcing its status as the alliance’s weakest pillar. Prashant Kishor’s Jan Suraaj Party, projected by some as a potential disruptor, failed to make any electoral impression.

Seat Tally: BJP Ahead, JD(U) Strong, Allies Surprising

The BJP and JD(U) together crossed the majority threshold comfortably. Early wins showed BJP at 23 seats and JD(U) at 11, with both maintaining strong leads in dozens of constituencies. Surprisingly, Chirag Paswan’s LJP(RV) delivered one of the election’s most unexpected performances, winning one seat and leading in several more—transforming itself from an underdog to a serious negotiating force.

On the opposition side, the RJD lagged with just a handful of seats in early tallies, Congress could barely secure a foothold, and smaller allies like CPI(M), CPI(ML), and AIMIM registered marginal gains. Even Tejashwi Yadav, facing a tense battle in Raghopur, struggled to maintain momentum before staging a temporary late comeback.

Nitish Kumar’s Leadership: A Decisive Factor Behind NDA’s Sweep

The results not only showcased NDA’s strength but also reaffirmed the enduring trust Bihar’s voters continue to place in Nitish Kumar. Despite speculation over whether he would be projected as the chief ministerial face, the verdict has effectively settled the debate: Bihar still sees Nitish Kumar as its most credible, stable, and development-driven leader.

Across districts, voters—cutting across caste, age, and economic lines—expressed strong appreciation for his governance track record. From improved roads and electrification to long-standing women’s welfare programs, Nitish Kumar’s policies resonated deeply. Even critics of local bureaucratic lapses admitted that he had “worked for the people” and maintained order in a state historically marred by lawlessness.

Governance Over Chaos: Why Voters Chose Stability

For many voters, the choice in 2025 mirrored their perception of governance versus instability. Memories of earlier periods—often labelled as jungle raj—played a silent yet powerful role in shaping electoral preferences. Nitish Kumar’s image as sushasan babu, a leader focused on rule of law and systematic administration, continued to overshadow accusations or controversies raised during the campaign.

While crime remains a complex challenge in Bihar, voters largely attribute order, impartiality, and infrastructural development to Nitish Kumar’s leadership. In contrast, the Mahagathbandhan’s campaign couldn’t convincingly counter the narrative or reclaim voter trust in high-stakes constituencies.

Women and EBCs: The Backbone of Nitish Kumar’s Support

A key pillar of the JD(U)’s success is its deep connect with two major voter segments: women and extremely backward castes (EBCs). Nitish Kumar’s government has consistently empowered these groups through schemes for safety, entrepreneurship, education, pensions, free electricity, and financial incentives. The pre-poll announcements, including Rs. 10,000 support for women, only strengthened an already loyal base.

Political observers note that opposition parties failed to present any significant strategy to challenge Nitish Kumar’s hold over these decisive demographics. Women, especially in rural regions, credited him for tangible improvements in mobility, family welfare, and social security—creating a trust factor unmatched in the state.

The Mental Health Narrative Falls Flat Among Voters

Allegations regarding Nitish Kumar’s health—amplified repeatedly by opponents—did not resonate with the electorate. Voters acknowledged his age but unanimously maintained that he remained politically sharp, in control, and capable of governing. The seat-sharing negotiations also proved his political acumen, with the JD(U) securing advantageous exchanges with allies during ticket distribution.

A Leader Who Refuses to Be Overshadowed

Despite the NDA withholding a clear chief ministerial announcement before the elections, Nitish Kumar’s decision to intensify his JD(U)-centric campaign paid dividends. Party loyalists interpreted this as a sign of confidence, while undecided voters viewed it as a stabilizing factor. Analysts believe this assertiveness helped him consolidate a segment of voters who feared that sidelining Nitish could threaten the state’s governance equilibrium.

A Mandate Rooted in Development and Continuity

The sweeping mandate is not just a political victory—it is a reaffirmation of a developmental journey that Bihar’s voters believe is still incomplete. From road construction and institutional strengthening to welfare schemes and grassroots governance, Nitish Kumar continues to symbolize progress, stability, and administrative maturity.

With the NDA comfortably ahead and coalition partners performing beyond expectations, Bihar appears poised for another chapter under his leadership—one defined by continuity, welfare-driven governance and a renewed push toward long-term development.
