New Delhi/Srinagar: With preparations for the annual Amarnath Yatra entering the final phase, Jammu & Kashmir Director General of Police (DGP) Nalin Prabhat has directed senior police officials across the Union Territory to maintain a high state of readiness and strengthen security arrangements along pilgrimage routes and other sensitive locations.

The directions were issued during a high-level security review meeting held just two days after Union Home Minister Amit Shah reviewed arrangements for the upcoming pilgrimage. The DGP emphasized the need for heightened vigilance, seamless coordination among agencies, and proactive security measures to ensure the safe conduct of one of India’s largest religious pilgrimages.

DGP Calls for Heightened Vigil Across Sensitive Locations

During the review meeting, DGP Prabhat instructed officers to maintain enhanced vigilance across all vulnerable and sensitive areas connected to the pilgrimage.

He directed police formations to undertake:

  • Enhanced surveillance operations
  • Regular area domination exercises
  • Intensified cordon and search operations (CASO)
  • Continuous patrolling along pilgrimage routes
  • Increased security presence at tourist destinations
  • Monitoring of railway tracks and vulnerable pockets

The DGP stressed that all major routes associated with the pilgrimage should remain under round-the-clock security domination to prevent any security threat.

Daily Anti-Sabotage Checks Ordered Along Yatra Routes

Recognising the security sensitivities associated with the annual pilgrimage, the DGP directed that daily anti-sabotage checks be conducted throughout the duration of the Yatra.

Officials have been instructed to ensure comprehensive security sweeps along all designated pilgrimage routes before the movement of pilgrims. The directive aims to eliminate any potential security risks and strengthen confidence among devotees undertaking the pilgrimage.

Security agencies have also been asked to maintain constant monitoring of critical infrastructure and public movement corridors linked to the Yatra.

Quick Response Teams to be Deployed at Strategic Locations

To improve emergency response capabilities, DGP Prabhat ordered the deployment of Quick Response Teams (QRTs)at strategic points along the pilgrimage route.

The QRTs will be tasked with:

  • Responding to emergencies in real time
  • Assisting pilgrims during unforeseen situations
  • Supporting law enforcement operations
  • Managing crowd-related incidents
  • Coordinating with medical and disaster response teams

The move is aimed at ensuring rapid intervention in case of any security, medical or logistical emergencies during the pilgrimage.

Focus on Technology-Driven Security Measures

A major emphasis of the review meeting was the use of advanced technology to strengthen security management.

The DGP directed officials to ensure optimal utilization of:

  • CCTV surveillance networks
  • Modern monitoring systems
  • Real-time security tracking tools
  • Integrated command and control mechanisms

He instructed officers to strengthen surveillance coverage at:

  • Transit camps
  • Base camps
  • Pilgrimage routes
  • Important congregation points
  • Other critical Yatra locations

The use of technology, he noted, would significantly improve situational awareness and facilitate quicker responses to any emerging threat.

RFID Tracking System to Strengthen Monitoring

DGP Prabhat also stressed the effective utilisation of Radio Frequency Identification (RFID)-based tracking systems during the pilgrimage.

According to officials, RFID-based monitoring will help:

  • Track the movement of registered pilgrims
  • Monitor authorized Yatra vehicles
  • Improve emergency response capabilities
  • Enhance route management
  • Facilitate real-time coordination among security agencies

The system is expected to play a key role in improving operational efficiency and pilgrim safety throughout the Yatra period.

Monitoring of Terrorist Associates and Anti-National Elements Intensified

The DGP directed officers to maintain close watch on terrorist associates and anti-national elements who could attempt to disrupt peace and security during the pilgrimage.

He instructed officials to:

  • Intensify intelligence gathering
  • Monitor suspicious activities
  • Strengthen security in hinterland areas
  • Maintain enhanced deployment in vulnerable regions
  • Secure sensitive installations linked to the Yatra

The directions come amid continued efforts by security agencies to maintain peace and stability in Jammu & Kashmir while ensuring the smooth conduct of major religious events.

Coordination With Civil Administration Emphasized

Recognizing that the successful conduct of the pilgrimage requires coordinated efforts among multiple agencies, DGP Prabhat instructed all District Senior Superintendents of Police (SSPs) to maintain close coordination with the civil administration.

The coordination framework will focus on:

  • Security arrangements
  • Pilgrim facilitation measures
  • Traffic management
  • Emergency services
  • Logistical support systems

Officials have also been directed to ensure adequate deployment of police personnel along the National Highway and other critical routes used by pilgrims and tourists.

Disaster Management and Contingency Planning Reviewed

The DGP stressed the importance of comprehensive contingency planning and preparedness for unforeseen situations.

He instructed officers to conduct regular coordination meetings and ensure readiness for:

  • Natural disasters
  • Fire incidents
  • Adverse weather conditions
  • Medical emergencies
  • Crowd management challenges
  • Other unexpected contingencies

The focus, officials said, is to create a multi-layered response mechanism capable of addressing any emergency situation swiftly and effectively.

Senior Police Leadership Participates in Security Review

The high-level meeting was attended by several senior police officers from across Jammu & Kashmir, including:

  • Special DGP Coordination SJM Gillani
  • ADGP Armed
  • ADGP CID
  • IGP Police Headquarters
  • IGP Kashmir Zone
  • IGP Jammu Zone
  • IGP Railways
  • IGP Traffic
  • IGP CID
  • Senior officers from various police wings across the Union Territory

The participation of senior leadership reflects the importance being attached to the security and management of the Amarnath Yatra 2026.

Security Preparations Gain Momentum Ahead of Pilgrimage

The latest review comes as security agencies, civil administration and central forces intensify preparations for the annual pilgrimage, which attracts thousands of devotees from across India and abroad.

With enhanced surveillance, strengthened intelligence gathering, deployment of modern technologies and coordinated security planning, authorities are aiming to ensure a safe, secure and seamless pilgrimage experience for all devotees undertaking the sacred journey to the Amarnath cave shrine.
