World Tiger Day 2026: Madhya Pradesh’s Tiger Population May Cross 1,100, New Habitats Emerge as Biggest Conservation Challenge

With Madhya Pradesh's tiger population projected to exceed 1,100 in the 2026 census, forest officials say creating new habitats and protecting wildlife corridors has become the state's biggest conservation priority.

Bhopal: As the world marks Global Tiger Day 2026, Madhya Pradesh is poised to further strengthen its position as India’s ‘Tiger State’, with forest officials estimating that the state’s tiger population could cross 1,100 in the upcoming 2026 tiger census.

The projected figure marks a nearly 40% increase over the 785 tigers recorded during the 2022 All India Tiger Estimation, making it one of the fastest-growing tiger populations in the country. However, officials say the remarkable conservation success has brought a new challenge—finding safe habitats and preserving wildlife corridors for the expanding tiger population.

Tiger Numbers Rising Beyond Protected Areas

According to Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (PCCF) and Head of Forest Force Shubhranjan Sen, successful breeding over the past four years has significantly boosted tiger numbers across the state.

Unlike previous exercises, the ongoing scientific census has covered not only protected tiger reserves but also unprotected forest areas, providing a more comprehensive assessment of the population. Cubs older than one-and-a-half years have also been included in the estimation, contributing to the expected rise.

Forest officials believe the final count could touch or even exceed 1,100 tigers.

Young Tigers Expanding Into New Territories

The growing tiger population is increasingly moving beyond traditional tiger reserves.

Wildlife experts explain that young tigers naturally disperse after reaching adulthood to establish their own territories. With core and buffer zones becoming increasingly occupied, many tigers have begun moving into forest divisions such as Bhopal, Raisen and Dewas, as well as other unprotected landscapes.

The Bhopal Forest Division illustrates this transformation. Until 2006, it had virtually no permanent tiger population. Today, officials estimate that more than 30 tigers inhabit the division.

Habitat Expansion Now the Biggest Challenge

Forest officials say increasing tiger numbers is a conservation success, but sustaining that growth will require expanding and securing habitats.

The department’s priority has shifted from merely increasing tiger numbers to ensuring safe movement through natural wildlife corridors, creating additional habitats and reducing conflicts between humans and wildlife.

Encroachment into forest corridors, expanding infrastructure projects and increasing human activity are disrupting traditional movement routes, making corridor conservation a critical issue.

Human-Wildlife Conflict on the Rise

As tiger populations expand beyond protected reserves, encounters with humans have become more frequent.

Officials warn that unless forests, buffer zones and wildlife corridors remain connected, tigers will increasingly venture into villages, agricultural fields, scrub forests and human settlements, leading to higher instances of conflict.

The Forest Department believes that protecting landscape connectivity will be as important as protecting the animals themselves.

Leopard Population Also Expected to Increase

Alongside the tiger census, Madhya Pradesh is also witnessing a steady rise in its leopard population.

Officials estimate that the state’s leopard numbers could cross 4,500 during the 2026 wildlife census, further underlining the importance of landscape-level conservation planning.

Madhya Pradesh: India’s ‘Tiger State’

Madhya Pradesh continues to possess one of the country’s richest wildlife landscapes, comprising:

  • 09 Tiger Reserves
  • 11 National Parks
  • 25 Wildlife Sanctuaries
  • 77,000 sq km of forest area
  • 785 tigers recorded in the 2022 census—the highest among all Indian states

With the tiger population now expected to cross the 1,100-mark, the state’s conservation strategy is entering a new phase where protecting habitats, restoring wildlife corridors and ensuring coexistence between people and wildlife will define the future of tiger conservation.
