Court Finds Death Was Suicide
The court observed that the woman’s death was a case of suicide, and highlighted serious inconsistencies in the prosecution’s case, particularly in witness statements regarding alleged dowry demands.
It noted that claims of dowry payments, including large cash transactions, were not substantiated with credible evidence.
Background of the Case
The case dates back to April 2021, when an FIR was filed based on a complaint by the victim’s father, Subhash Chandra.
He alleged that:
- He spent around ₹2.75 crore on his daughter’s wedding
- ₹15 lakh cash, gold, a car, and a plot were given as dowry
- Additional ₹2 crore in cash was demanded by the groom’s family
He further accused Aman Singla of forcing his daughter to consume medicines, leading to her death within six months of marriage.
Following the complaint, the accused were arrested on April 9, 2021.
Key Observations by the Court
The court raised several critical questions and inconsistencies in the prosecution’s narrative:
- No clear evidence of ₹30 lakh cash payment on the wedding day
- The disputed Panchkula plot was jointly registered in the names of the couple
- The conduct of key witnesses, including the deceased’s aunt (a senior lawyer), was found questionable
- Delay in taking the victim to hospital or informing authorities raised doubts
The court stated that the prosecution failed to establish that dowry harassment occurred immediately before the death, a key requirement under dowry death laws.
Defence Stand
Aman Singla denied all allegations, maintaining that he shared a peaceful marital life with his wife for most of their time together.
He argued that the case was premeditated, allegedly influenced by the victim’s relatives after her death.
