Indian Masterminds Stories

New Delhi: Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) has secured a ₹1,251 crore contract from the Ministry of Defence to supply the Ground Based Mobile ELINT System (GBMES) to the Indian Army, marking a significant boost to India’s indigenous defence capabilities.

The announcement was made through regulatory filings with the National Stock Exchange (NSE) and BSE, in compliance with SEBI listing regulations.

Contract Signed with Ministry of Defence

BEL confirmed that the agreement has been officially signed with the Ministry of Defence. The contract value excludes applicable taxes and strengthens BEL’s position as a leading defence public sector undertaking (PSU).

The system is fully indigenous and has been designed by the Defence Electronics Research Laboratory (DLRL), Hyderabad, while manufacturing will be carried out by BEL.

What is the GBMES System?

The Ground Based Mobile ELINT System (GBMES) is a next-generation electronic intelligence platform designed to enhance battlefield awareness and air defence capabilities.

Key Features:

  • Detects and identifies radar systems
  • Locates and classifies radar emitters with precision
  • Intercepts and analyses communication signals
  • Provides real-time situational intelligence
  • Strengthens air defence readiness

The system plays a critical role in modern electronic warfare by monitoring and countering enemy radar and communication networks.

Boost to India’s Defence Self-Reliance

The GBMES aligns with the government’s “Atmanirbhar Bharat” initiative in the defence sector. Experts say such systems reduce dependence on foreign technology while improving surveillance and operational readiness of the armed forces.

The deployment will significantly enhance the Indian Army’s capability in high-threat environments.

Strong Momentum in BEL’s Order Book

The ₹1,251 crore contract adds to BEL’s growing defence order pipeline. The company continues to secure major projects in radar systems, electronic warfare, communications, and missile-related technologies.

In April 2026, BEL had also secured orders worth ₹569 crore, further strengthening its portfolio.

Strong Financial and Operational Performance

BEL has reported robust growth in FY26:

  • Order inflows: ~₹30,000 crore
  • Export orders: $346 million
  • Export sales growth: 33.6%
  • Q3FY26 revenue: ₹7,122 crore (up 23.7%)
  • Net profit: ₹1,590 crore (up 20.8%)

This reflects strong execution and increasing global demand for its defence products.
