Patna: The Bihar government has taken a major step to strengthen the state’s road infrastructure by approving five new state highway projects across Madhubani, Sitamarhi, Darbhanga, Supaul, and Buxar districts. The projects, cleared by the state cabinet, will significantly improve connectivity and ease transportation across key regions.
₹3,740 Crore Investment Under Bihar Road Expansion Plan
Under the Road Construction Department Bihar, the total estimated cost of the five highway projects is around ₹3,740 crore. The initiatives aim to enhance road width, strengthen existing stretches, and develop bypasses for smoother traffic flow.
The projects will be executed with financial support from the Asian Development Bank, ensuring structured funding and timely implementation.

Key Highway Projects Approved in Five Districts
The approved projects cover major routes in five districts:
- Madhubani–Rajnagar–Khutauna road (38.87 km)
- Sitamarhi–Pupri–Beni Patti road
- Vishnupur–Atarbel–Jale–Ghogharachatti road in Darbhanga (47.87 km)
- Ganpatganj–Parwaaha road in Supaul
- Brahmapur–Koran Sarai–Itadhi–Buxar and Ujiyarpur–Kukraha–Jamuaon–Samda road in Buxar (80.72 km)
These upgrades include widening, strengthening, and major connectivity improvements across the state.
Major Upgrades in Madhubani and Sitamarhi
In Madhubani, the 38.87 km stretch from Rajnagar to Khutauna will be widened and strengthened at a cost of ₹632.72 crore. The project includes a railway overbridge (ROB), a bypass at Rajnagar, and a new bypass at Babubarhi to ease traffic congestion.
In Sitamarhi, the Sitamarhi–Pupri–Beni Patti road will be widened with an investment of ₹434.37 crore.
Improved Connectivity in Darbhanga and Supaul
In Darbhanga, the Vishnupur–Atarbel–Jale–Ghogharachatti road will be upgraded over 47.87 km at a cost of ₹990 crore. The project also includes the construction of four new bypasses to improve traffic movement.
In Supaul, the Ganpatganj–Parwaaha road will be developed with an investment of ₹703.95 crore, enhancing regional connectivity and linking several key routes.
Infrastructure Boost for Buxar District
Buxar district will see major road development under two stretches totaling 80.72 km. The combined cost of ₹982.58 crore will go into widening and strengthening roads to improve traffic flow and reduce congestion in the region.
Tender Process to Begin Soon
According to officials from the Road Construction Department Bihar, the government will soon float tenders for these projects. Once completed, the upgraded highways are expected to significantly improve inter-district connectivity and reduce travel time across Bihar.
