Patna: Bihar has taken a major step towards modernising its criminal justice system by successfully conducting the first mock trial of the ‘Nyayshruti’ system, a digital initiative aimed at ensuring faster, more efficient and technology-driven judicial proceedings.
The pilot project was conducted under the leadership of Bihar Home Department Secretary Kundan Kumar as part of continuous monitoring efforts to ensure the effective implementation of the new criminal laws in the state.
Bihar Conducts First Mock Trial of Nyayshruti System
The first pilot trial of the Nyayshruti system was successfully organised in Bihar as part of efforts to digitally transform judicial procedures under the new criminal law framework.
For this special trial, a case from the court of Patna District and Additional Sessions Judge-23 Gaurav Kumar was selected.
The complete trial process was conducted successfully by digitally connecting all major pillars of the criminal justice system, including:
- Prosecution office
- Adarsh Central Jail, Beur, Patna
- Forensic Science Laboratory, Patna
- Court proceedings through digital platforms
The entire mock trial process was successfully managed and coordinated by the National Informatics Centre (NIC).
Nyayshruti System Aims to Make Judicial Process Faster and Digital
The primary objective of the Nyayshruti system is to reduce delays, save time and improve efficiency in court proceedings by using secure digital technology.
Under this system, physical presence in courts will no longer be mandatory for several key participants involved in criminal cases.
The platform will allow:
- Witnesses to record their statements digitally
- Police officials to provide testimony remotely
- Prison inmates to participate in court proceedings without physical movement
- Scientific experts to submit evidence through secure digital channels
This technology-based approach is expected to reduce logistical challenges and speed up the disposal of pending cases.
Digital Platform to Improve Access to Justice
The introduction of Nyayshruti is expected to make justice delivery more accessible, transparent and efficient for citizens.
By reducing the need for physical movement of witnesses, prisoners, police personnel and experts, the system will help save resources and minimise delays in criminal trials.
The initiative supports the broader objective of providing faster and easier access to justice for the common people.
Bihar’s Criminal Justice System Moves Towards Technology-Based Governance
With the successful completion of the pilot trial, Bihar aims to strengthen coordination among various pillars of the criminal justice system through digital integration.
The Home Department, along with prosecution agencies, courts, prisons and forensic institutions, is working towards making Bihar’s law and justice delivery system a model for other states.
Nyayshruti System to Be Expanded Across Bihar Courts
Following the successful pilot project, the Nyayshruti system will be implemented gradually in other district courts across Bihar.
The expansion of this digital system is expected to bring significant improvements in judicial efficiency and support the effective implementation of the new criminal laws in the state.
The initiative marks an important milestone in Bihar’s journey towards a modern, technology-enabled and citizen-friendly justice system.
