New Delhi: In a landmark move aimed at enhancing transparency and candidate participation, the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) has announced that it will release the Provisional Answer Key for the Civil Services (Preliminary) Examination 2026 soon after the examination is conducted.

This is the first time in the history of the Civil Services Examination that candidates will be able to view the official provisional answers immediately after the test and submit objections before the final answer key is prepared.

UPSC Chairman Dr. Ajay Kumar described the initiative as “a new beginning” and a significant step toward greater openness in one of India’s most prestigious examinations.

Dr. Ajay Kumar: “A New Beginning” for UPSC Aspirants

Announcing the reform, UPSC Chairman Dr. Ajay Kumar said:

“For the first time, the Union Public Service Commission will release the Provisional Answer Key for the Civil Services Examination. This initiative reflects the Commission’s ongoing endeavour to bring greater transparency, responsiveness, and timely communication with candidates.”

He added: “The policy aims to make the examination process more participative while upholding its sanctity, integrity, and merit-based framework.”

The move addresses a long-standing demand from aspirants who have sought early access to official answer keys for better evaluation and a fair opportunity to challenge disputed questions.

How Candidates Can Challenge the Provisional Answer Key

After the provisional answer key is published, candidates will be allowed to submit representations through the dedicated Online Question Paper Representation Portal (QPRep).

Online Question Paper Representation Portal (QPRep)

Candidates must:

  • Log in to the portal
  • Select the relevant question
  • Indicate the answer they believe is correct
  • Provide a brief explanation
  • Upload supporting references from three authentic sources

According to the Commission, representations for the 2026 examination can be submitted until May 31, 2026, at 6:00 PM.

Subject Experts Will Review Every Representation

All objections received from candidates will be forwarded to teams of subject experts with specialized domain knowledge.

These experts will:

  • Examine each representation in detail
  • Review the supporting documents
  • Record their findings
  • Recommend whether any answer requires correction

Only after considering all representations will UPSC finalize the official answer key.

Why This Reform Matters for UPSC Aspirants

The early release of the provisional answer key offers several important benefits:

Immediate Performance Assessment

Candidates can estimate their probable scores soon after the exam.

Fair Opportunity to Raise Objections

Aspirants can challenge doubtful answers with credible evidence.

Increased Transparency

The process allows greater visibility into how answer disputes are handled.

Improved Candidate Confidence

The reform strengthens trust in the integrity and fairness of the examination system.

Long-Standing Demand Finally Addressed

For years, UPSC aspirants and coaching experts have urged the Commission to release provisional answer keys before finalizing results. Until now, official answer keys were generally published only after the entire examination process was completed.

By introducing this policy, UPSC has taken a major step toward aligning with best practices followed by many other competitive examination bodies.

UPSC Reaffirms Commitment to Integrity and Merit

The Commission emphasized that the new policy is intended to strengthen transparency and accountability without compromising the sanctity of the examination.

UPSC stated that the initiative is part of its broader commitment to ensuring a robust, merit-based, and trusted selection process for India’s future civil servants.
