New Delhi: India-Australia defence industrial collaboration is set to enter a new phase as both countries agreed to develop a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on defence articles and services. The announcement came after the second India-Australia Defence Ministers’ Dialogue held in India.
According to the official joint statement, the move aims to deepen defence cooperation, support military co-production, and expand long-term strategic ties.

India’s Defence Minister Rajnath Singh met Australian Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister Richard Marles during the dialogue.

Key decisions include:
- Development of an MoU on defence industrial cooperation
- Greater focus on co-production and co-development of defence equipment
- Expansion of defence industry exchanges
- Stronger maritime security cooperation
- Future cooperation in defence science and technology
The two countries also reviewed progress made since the first Defence Ministers’ Dialogue held in October 2025.
Key Focus Areas of India Australia Defence Industrial Collaboration
Maritime cooperation remained one of the biggest outcomes of the meeting.
Both ministers agreed to:
- Advance maritime domain awareness activities
- Use maritime patrol aircraft cooperation
- Explore better undersea domain awareness
- Increase cooperation between the Indian Coast Guard and Australia’s Maritime Border Command
The countries also discussed finalising the Joint Maritime Security Collaboration Roadmap.
This shows growing concern about regional maritime security, safe sea routes, and open trade movement.
Support for a Free and Open Indo-Pacific
India and Australia reaffirmed support for:
- Freedom of navigation
- Freedom of overflight
- Uninterrupted lawful trade
- International law under the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS)
Both sides stressed the importance of a free, open, peaceful, stable and prosperous Indo-Pacific region.
Upcoming Joint Maritime Exercise
India and Australia will jointly host a Search and Rescue (SAR) tabletop exercise in Chennai in June 2026.
The event will be organised through the Indian Ocean Rim Association’s maritime safety and security framework.
The exercise aims to improve:
- Maritime safety cooperation
- Regional emergency response coordination
- Indian Ocean security partnerships
