What is the Logistics Port Performance Index (LPPI)?
The LPPI is a national benchmarking framework developed under the Sagar Aankalan initiative. It is designed to evaluate and improve the operational performance of Indian ports.
Main Objectives
- Improve port productivity.
- Encourage continuous improvement.
- Promote global benchmarking.
- Strengthen India’s maritime competitiveness.
- Support efficient logistics and trade operations.
How LPPI Measures Port Performance
The index evaluates ports across three major cargo categories:
1. Dry Bulk Cargo
Examples:
- Coal
- Iron ore
- Fertilizers
2. Liquid Bulk Cargo
Examples:
- Crude oil
- Petroleum products
- Chemicals
3. Container Cargo
Examples:
- Export and import containers
The assessment is based on operational indicators such as:
- Cargo handled
- Vessel turnaround time
- Berth idle time
- Pre-berthing waiting time
- Container dwell time
- Ship berth day output
The framework gives equal importance to both current performance and year-on-year improvement, encouraging ports to continuously improve operations.
Four Major Digital Maritime Reforms Launched
Alongside LPPI, the Directorate General of Shipping (DGS) introduced four digital initiatives.
1. 24×7 Grievance Redressal Module (e-Navik)
