New Delhi: India defence production FY 2025-26 has reached an all-time high of ₹1.78 lakh crore, marking a major milestone in India’s journey toward self-reliance in defence manufacturing. According to the official release issued by the Ministry of Defence, defence production increased by 15.6% compared to the previous financial year and has more than doubled over the last five years. This achievement highlights the growing strength of India’s indigenous defence industry and the success of the government’s Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative.
Details of India Defence Production
The Ministry of Defence stated that India’s annual defence production touched ₹1.78 lakh crore in FY 2025-26, compared to ₹1.54 lakh crore in FY 2024-25. Key highlights include:
- Defence production grew by 15.6% year-on-year
- Production was ₹84,643 crore in FY 2020-21
- Production was ₹43,746 crore in FY 2013-14
- Indigenous defence manufacturing has nearly quadrupled over the past decade
- India continues to strengthen domestic defence capabilities under Atmanirbhar Bharat
Public and Private Sectors Both Contributed
According to the official figures:
- Defence Public Sector Undertakings (DPSUs) and other PSUs contributed around 76% of total production
- The private sector contributed 24%
- Private sector participation increased from 22% in FY 2024-25
- Private sector output reached approximately ₹42,000 crore
This growth reflects the increasing role of private companies in India’s defence ecosystem.
Defence Exports Also Hit Record Levels
The strong manufacturing growth has supported India’s defence exports. Major achievements:
- Defence exports reached a record ₹38,424 crore in FY 2025-26
- Exports increased by 62.66% over the previous fiscal year
- Indian-made defence equipment is now reaching more international markets
- The export growth strengthens India’s position as an emerging global defence supplier
India Defence Production: Government Credits Atmanirbhar Bharat Initiative
The Ministry of Defence said the growth reflects the government’s continued focus on:
- Self-reliance in defence manufacturing
- Indigenous weapons and military systems
- Increased participation of Indian industry
- Technology development and innovation
- Expansion of defence exports
The Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative has encouraged domestic production and reduced dependence on foreign imports.
Rajnath Singh Welcomes the India Defence Production
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh praised the achievement and credited the leadership of Narendra Modi. He stated that India’s defence production is reaching new heights every year and highlighted the collective efforts of the Department of Defence Production, public sector companies, and private industry. The minister also said that strong policy support, increasing private participation, and growing export capabilities will help sustain future growth.
Major Indigenous Defence Programs Supporting Growth
India’s defence manufacturing ecosystem has expanded through several indigenous platforms and programs, including:
- HAL Tejas fighter aircraft
- Akash Missile System
- Pinaka Rocket System
- INS Vikrant
- INS Arihant
- BrahMos Missile
These programs have helped build domestic manufacturing capabilities and strengthen India’s defence industry.
