Mumbai: The indigenous missile cooling technology developed by Mumbai-based Techno Defence Pvt Ltd has achieved a major breakthrough for India’s defence sector. The company has successfully designed and developed a homegrown Joule-Thomson (JT) Cooler for missile seekers, a technology that was previously dominated by a few Western countries. Developed with support from DRDO, the innovation strengthens India’s defence self-reliance and opens new opportunities in the global defence market.

India Develops Critical Indigenous Missile Cooling Technology

Techno Defence Pvt Ltd, a Mumbai-based start-up, has successfully developed an indigenous Joule-Thomson (JT) Cooler used in missile seeker systems. The technology was developed with support from the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) under its Technology Development Fund (TDF) scheme.

According to reports, the project was led by IIT Bombay alumnus Dr Pravin Salinkar, a former DRDO laboratory director, along with a team of engineers and defence technology experts.

What Is a JT Cooler and Why Is It Important

A Joule-Thomson Cooler is a miniature cooling device used in infrared-guided missile seekers. Its primary role is to cool infrared sensors to extremely low temperatures, around -196°C, allowing them to accurately detect and track targets. Without such cooling, background thermal noise can interfere with sensor performance, reducing the missile’s ability to identify distant targets.

Breaking a Long-Standing Western Monopoly

The JT Cooler technology is classified as a strategic defence technology and is regulated under the Missile Technology Control Regime (MTCR). Until now, only a limited number of countries, including the United States, France, and Israel, possessed advanced expertise in this field.

The successful indigenous development marks a significant achievement for India’s defence manufacturing ecosystem and reduces dependence on foreign suppliers.

Indigenous Missile Cooling Technology: Years of Research and DRDO Support

The project began around 2017–18 when Dr Salinkar accepted the challenge of developing the technology. Later, the company secured funding through DRDO’s Technology Development Fund programme to design and manufacture the JT Cooler domestically. The development process involved collaboration with local industries, precision manufacturing facilities, and advanced research institutions.

Indigenous Missile Cooling Technology: Successful Trials Confirm Capability

By 2023–24, the indigenous JT Cooler was completed and handed over to DRDO for evaluation and testing. The trials were reportedly successful, validating the technology’s performance and reliability for defence applications.

The achievement positions India among a small group of nations capable of producing this highly specialised missile subsystem.

Expert Analysis: Why This Breakthrough Matters

Defence analysts view the indigenous JT Cooler as more than just a component-level achievement. Missile seekers are among the most sensitive and technologically complex parts of modern weapon systems. Developing a key subsystem domestically improves supply-chain security, lowers import dependence, and enhances India’s strategic autonomy.

As global defence supply chains become increasingly competitive, mastering niche technologies like missile cooling systems could give India a stronger position in both defence production and exports.
