The celebrations highlighted how yoga has become an important part of military life, helping personnel stay calm, focused, and healthy in extreme environments.
International Yoga Day 2026: Indian Army Performs Yoga in Extreme Conditions
The Indian Army, Navy, and Air Force organized yoga sessions across the country and at sea to mark the 12th International Day of Yoga. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh also participated in a large yoga session with around 1,000 soldiers in Shillong.
The theme for this year’s celebration was “Yoga for Healthy Ageing“, emphasizing the role of yoga in improving health, flexibility, and mental well-being throughout life.
Indian Army personnel practiced yoga in some of India’s most challenging locations, including:
- Siachen Glacier, the world’s highest battlefield
- High-altitude regions of Ladakh
- Remote posts in Arunachal Pradesh
- Forward military bases across the country
At these locations, soldiers face:
| Challenge | Impact on Soldiers |
| Extreme cold | Risk of frostbite and fatigue |
| Thin oxygen levels | Breathing difficulties |
| High altitude | Increased physical stress |
| Isolation | Mental pressure and stress |
Yoga and breathing exercises help soldiers improve lung capacity, maintain focus, reduce stress, and adapt to difficult conditions.
International Yoga Day 2026: Indian Navy Conducts Unique Underwater Yoga Session
One of the most remarkable events took place at INS Satvahana, where Indian Navy submariners performed a special underwater yoga session.
According to the Indian Navy, the exercise showcased the connection between physical fitness, mental discipline, and operational preparedness. Around 40 submariners participated in the unique event.
Why Underwater Yoga
Submarine operations require:
- Excellent breath control
- Mental concentration
- Emotional stability
- Strong physical endurance
Yoga helps sailors develop these qualities, making it a useful training tool alongside conventional military exercises.
