Indian Masterminds Stories

Delhi: In a significant move to improve basic facilities in unauthorized colonies across Delhi, the government, under the leadership of Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, has increased the development fund allocation by 25% for the current fiscal year. The enhancement brings the total development fund to ₹629 crore, with an additional ₹129 crore added to the originally proposed ₹500 crore. This is part of the government’s ongoing effort to provide better infrastructure and services to the residents of these colonies.

25% Increase in Development Fund

Delhi’s unauthorized colonies, home to nearly 40-45 lakh residents, have long suffered from poor infrastructure. The increase in the development fund will cover a range of essential services, including roads, sewage systems, street lighting, and water supply. The government has now earmarked a total of ₹629 crore for these works, which will address the growing needs of the residents.

Progress in Development Projects: 47 Plans Completed

As part of the ongoing initiative, the Delhi government has approved a total of 272 small and large projects for development in unauthorized colonies. Out of these, 47 projects have already been completed in 43 colonies. The remaining 229 projects are still under progress, focusing on improving key infrastructure such as roads, sewage, and drainage systems. These projects are being carried out under the supervision of the Irrigation and Flood Control Department and DSIIDC.

Special Allocation for Urgent Needs

In addition to the general development fund, the government also allocated a separate ₹500 crore specifically to address the urgent needs in unauthorized colonies. However, due to growing demands, an extra ₹129 crore has been added to this allocation. These funds are aimed at improving facilities such as education, water supply, urban development, and public infrastructure in these areas.

1731 Unauthorized Colonies in Delhi

Delhi has over 1731 unauthorized colonies, which are home to a large section of the city’s population. Some of the worst-affected areas include Karawal Nagar, Sangam Vihar, KIrari, Chhatarpur, and Badarpur. These areas have been facing challenges such as poor roads, inadequate drainage systems, water scarcity, and pollution. Recently, CM Rekha Gupta launched development projects worth ₹100 crore each in Badarpur and Chhatarpur, marking a significant step toward addressing these issues.

Legislative Funds Utilization

Delhi’s legislators have also made substantial progress in utilizing the funds allocated to their respective constituencies. The government had allocated ₹350 crore for the MLA fund, with each constituency receiving ₹5 crore. By January 2026, ₹230 crore worth of projects have already been approved, amounting to 65.71% of the allocated budget. Over 1150 projects have received approval, showcasing the significant progress in implementing development initiatives.

Political Significance of Unauthorized Colonies

Unauthorized colonies in Delhi played a crucial role in the victory of the BJP government. These areas, plagued by poor infrastructure, have been a focus of political and developmental attention. The BJP government has focused on improving these colonies for two primary reasons: first, their political significance, as many voters from these colonies contributed to the party’s success; and second, the pressing need to resolve issues like pollution, waterlogging, and lack of basic amenities that have long plagued these areas.

Focus on Sustainable Growth

The Delhi government’s focus on improving infrastructure in unauthorized colonies reflects its commitment to ensuring equitable development across all areas. By increasing the development budget and prioritizing essential services, the government aims to elevate the living standards of millions of residents and create a more sustainable and prosperous Delhi for all.
