New Delhi: The Delhi government has taken a major decision to expand the scope of its slum rehabilitation policy, ensuring that all eligible residents of slum settlements existing in the capital up to January 1, 2025 will be included in the rehabilitation scheme.
The decision was approved during the 36th Board Meeting of the Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board (DUSIB), chaired by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta.
Historic Decision in DUSIB 36th Board Meeting
In the meeting, the Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board (DUSIB) approved a key proposal aimed at widening the scope of rehabilitation benefits for slum dwellers.
Key highlights of the decision include:
- All slum settlements in Delhi existing up to January 1, 2025 will be eligible
- Residents will be covered under the government’s rehabilitation and resettlement scheme
- The move is expected to benefit thousands of families across the capital
The Chief Minister’s Office described the decision as a “historic step” toward inclusive urban development.
Major Relief for Nearly 4 Lakh Families
The policy expansion is expected to significantly benefit slum residents across Delhi. Earlier, Union Home Minister Amit Shah had announced that the Delhi Slum and Jhuggi-Jhopri Rehabilitation and Resettlement Policy 2026 has been finalized, which is expected to benefit around 4 lakh families.
The policy aims to provide structured housing solutions and improve living conditions for slum dwellers through planned rehabilitation projects.
Amit Shah’s Directions on Slum Redevelopment
On June 16, Union Home Minister Amit Shah chaired a high-level review meeting on slum rehabilitation in Delhi. During the meeting, he issued several key directions, including:
- Finalization of rehabilitation policy under PPP model
- Issuing tenders for at least 5 rehabilitation projects every month
- Preparation of project reports for 50 additional slum clusters
- Completion of tenders for 5 slum clusters within 45 days
He also emphasized that eligibility for rehabilitation should be based on the cutoff date of January 1, 2025.
Key Government and Administrative Participation
The high-level meetings included participation from:
- Union Home Minister Amit Shah
- Union Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Manohar Lal
- Delhi Lieutenant Governor Tarunjit Singh Sandhu
- Chief Minister Rekha Gupta
- Senior officials from DDA and DUSIB
These discussions focused on accelerating implementation and ensuring structured urban redevelopment.
Push for PPP-Based Rehabilitation Projects
The government has emphasized the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model to fast-track rehabilitation projects across Delhi. Authorities have been directed to ensure timely execution of housing projects and improved coordination between agencies such as:
- Delhi Development Authority (DDA)
- Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board (DUSIB)
The aim is to ensure efficient redevelopment of slum clusters with modern housing facilities.
With the expansion of eligibility criteria and the implementation of the 2026 rehabilitation policy, Delhi is set to significantly scale up its slum redevelopment efforts. The initiative is expected to improve living conditions for lakhs of residents while promoting planned urban development across the capital.
