New Delhi: Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, in the presence of Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu, flagged off 200 new electric buses on Wednesday, strengthening the city’s cleaner and more sustainable public transport network.
The new buses take Delhi’s overall DTC fleet to nearly 6,800 buses, while the number of electric buses in the city has reached nearly 5,000.
The initiative also marks the revival of Ladies Special bus services, with 56 dedicated electric buses being introduced on routes serving major university areas and other locations with high demand among women commuters.
200 Electric Buses Added to Delhi’s Public Transport Fleet
The 200 new electric buses were flagged off from the Delhi University Sports Complex.
According to the Chief Minister, following the latest addition, Delhi’s bus fleet will comprise approximately:
- 4,938 electric buses
- 1,750 CNG buses
- Nearly 6,800 buses in total
Gupta said Delhi now has the highest number of electric buses in the country, highlighting the government’s focus on cleaner public transportation.
The expansion is expected to support the transition towards low-emission public transport while improving connectivity across the capital.
56 Ladies Special Electric Bus Services Restarted
A key feature of the initiative is the launch of 56 dedicated Ladies Special electric bus services.
The services will connect major educational institutions and university areas, including:
- Hindu College
- Ramjas College
- Daulat Ram College
- Shri Ram College of Commerce
- Lady Shri Ram College
- Gargi College
- Hansraj College
- Sri Guru Gobind Singh College of Commerce
The services are aimed at providing women and students with more convenient and safer public transport options.
Chief Minister Rekha Gupta recalled using university special buses during her student years and highlighted the significance of bringing the service back after a long gap.
Delhi-Karnal Electric Bus Service Launched
The government also launched five fully electric, air-conditioned inter-state buses on the Delhi-Karnal route.
The approximately 133-km one-way route will operate with 10 daily trips in each direction, providing passengers with an additional clean and comfortable inter-state transport option.
The introduction of electric buses on the route is expected to support cleaner mobility between Delhi and Haryana.
Public EV Charging Station Inaugurated at Rajghat Depot
Along with the new bus services, a public electric vehicle charging station at Rajghat Depot-I was also launched.
The facility is expected to support the growing electric mobility ecosystem in Delhi and complement the rapid expansion of the city’s electric bus fleet.
Delhi Government Focuses on Safer Mobility for Women
The relaunch of Ladies Special services is aimed at improving mobility for women, particularly students travelling to and from educational institutions.
Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu said the Ladies Special buses should be viewed not only as a mode of transportation but also as a safe means of mobility for women.
The initiative combines women-focused public transport with Delhi’s broader transition towards electric and cleaner mobility.
Delhi Expands Cleaner and Sustainable Public Transport
The latest measures bring together three key areas of Delhi’s transport strategy — electric mobility, inter-state connectivity and safer transportation for women.
The addition of 200 electric buses, revival of Ladies Special services, launch of the Delhi-Karnal e-bus route and inauguration of a public EV charging station are expected to further strengthen Delhi’s public transport infrastructure.
The flag-off ceremony was attended by Cabinet colleague Dr Pankaj Kumar Singh, MLA Suryaprakash Khatri and other dignitaries.
