New Delhi: India’s ET-LDHCM hypersonic missile program has reached a major milestone as the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) advances booster integration under the classified Project Vishnu. This step marks a crucial transition from lab-level development to real-world weapon assembly.

The ET-LDHCM, designed to travel at speeds above Mach 8, is expected to significantly strengthen India’s strategic defence capabilities. With ongoing work on specialized manufacturing tools and propulsion systems, India is moving closer to deploying one of its most advanced next-generation hypersonic weapons.

What is ET-LDHCM Hypersonic Missile?

The Extended Trajectory Long Duration Hypersonic Cruise Missile (ET-LDHCM) is an advanced scramjet-powered missile being developed by DRDO under Project Vishnu.

  • Speed: Above Mach 8 (~11,000 km/h)
  • Range: Around 1,500 km or more
  • Capability: Conventional and nuclear payload
  • Deployment: Air, land, and naval platforms

Unlike traditional missiles, it flies within the atmosphere and can change direction mid-flight, making it extremely difficult to intercept.

What is the Importance of ET-LDHCM Hypersonic Missile

DRDO has started manufacturing custom jigs and fixtures required for booster integration.

  • These tools ensure perfect alignment of missile components
  • Even minor errors at hypersonic speeds can cause failure
  • The booster helps accelerate the missile to speeds needed for scramjet activation

This stage is critical because it connects the rocket booster with the scramjet engine, forming a complete flight-ready system.

The ET-LDHCM offers several advantages:

  • Extreme speed reduces enemy reaction time
  • High maneuverability avoids air defence systems
  • Precision strike capability against critical targets
  • Multi-platform launch flexibility

Experts believe such hypersonic weapons can change the balance of power in modern warfare.

Scramjet Engine: The Core Technology

The ET-LDHCM uses an air-breathing scramjet engine, which allows sustained hypersonic speeds.

  • Uses atmospheric oxygen for combustion
  • Enables long-duration high-speed flight
  • Recent tests achieved extended combustion duration

This makes the missile faster and more efficient than traditional rocket-based systems.

What is Project Vishnu

Project Vishnu is not just one missile but a large defence program.

  • Includes up to 12 hypersonic systems
  • Covers both offensive and defensive weapons
  • Aims to strengthen India’s deterrence against global threats

The ET-LDHCM is considered the flagship system of this initiative.

What Happens Next?

With booster integration underway, the next steps include:

  • Full system assembly
  • Flight testing
  • Validation of speed, guidance, and durability

If successful, India could operationalize the missile within this decade.
