Kerala: The Mararikulam–Alappuzha Doubling Project has received approval from Indian Railways at a sanctioned cost of ₹220.51 crore, marking a major step towards improving rail infrastructure in Kerala.
The project aims to remove a key bottleneck on the Southern Railway network, increase train capacity, improve punctuality, and support economic growth across the region. According to the Ministry of Railways, the project will strengthen one of Kerala’s busiest railway corridors and facilitate smoother passenger and freight movement.
Key Highlights of Mararikulam–Alappuzha Doubling Project
- Project Cost: ₹220.51 crore
- Section Length: 10.65 km
- Railway Zone: Southern Railway
- Route: Mararikulam–Alappuzha section
- State: Kerala
- Approved By: Ministry of Railways, Government of India
- Announcement Date: June 8, 2026
Why Mararikulam–Alappuzha Doubling Project Matters
The Mararikulam–Alappuzha stretch is currently the last remaining single-line section on the important Ernakulam–Turavur–Alappuzha–Ambalapuzha–Kayamkulam corridor.
Most other sections on this route have already been doubled or are under implementation. Once this final gap is addressed, the corridor will experience significantly better train movement and capacity utilization.
Expected Benefits
- Operation of 9 additional passenger trains in each direction daily.
- Additional freight carrying capacity of 2.88 million tonnes per annum (MTPA).
- Faster movement of passenger and freight trains.
- Reduction in train detention and congestion.
- Improved punctuality and operational efficiency.
- Stronger regional connectivity across Kerala.
Economic Impact
The Ministry of Railways has stated that the project is expected to generate approximately ₹3.08 crore in additional annual net earnings through improved passenger and freight operations.
The proposal was evaluated under the Railway Ministry’s broader infrastructure expansion framework, which includes:
- Doubling projects
- Tripling projects
- Quadrupling projects
- Railway flyovers
- Bypass infrastructure works
The project has demonstrated:
- Financial Internal Rate of Return (FIRR): 3.99%
- Economic Internal Rate of Return (EIRR): 22.30%
These figures indicate strong long-term economic viability and public benefits.
Strategic Importance for Kerala
Kerala’s coastal railway corridor handles heavy passenger traffic and plays a crucial role in freight transportation.
The Mararikulam–Alappuzha section acts as a missing link in the corridor. Its doubling is expected to:
- Improve regional mobility.
- Support tourism in Alappuzha and nearby coastal destinations.
- Enhance logistics efficiency.
- Strengthen future railway expansion plans in Kerala.
- Support economic development and job creation through infrastructure growth.
How It Fits Into Kerala’s Railway Development Plan
The approval comes amid a broader push by Indian Railways to modernize Kerala’s rail infrastructure.
Recent approvals include:
- Turavur–Mararikulam Doubling Project (21.10 km) costing ₹450.59 crore.
- Alappuzha–Ambalapuzha Doubling Project costing ₹324.16 crore.
Together, these projects aim to eliminate capacity constraints on the Ernakulam–Kayamkulam corridor and create a more efficient railway network across the state.
