Lucknow: Shekha Jheel Ramsar Site has officially been declared India’s 99th Ramsar site, marking a major milestone in the country’s environmental conservation journey. 

The announcement was made by Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav on April 22, 2026. This recognition highlights the ecological importance of the wetland located in Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh, and strengthens India’s global commitment to protecting wetlands, biodiversity, and climate security. 

The move also brings economic and livelihood opportunities for local communities while placing Uttar Pradesh among the top states for Ramsar sites.

According to the official report, Shekha Jheel Bird Sanctuary has been designated as a Ramsar site, increasing India’s total to 99 and Uttar Pradesh’s count to 12.
