Bengaluru: Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), India’s premier aerospace and defence public sector enterprise, has appointed Kota Ravi as its Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) with effect from May 1, 2026. The appointment follows approval from the Ministry of Defence and has been disclosed to BSE and NSE under SEBI regulatory norms.
Kota Ravi succeeds outgoing CMD Dr. D.K. Sunil and will serve until his superannuation on June 30, 2029, or until further government orders.
Leadership Transition at a Key Growth Phase
The leadership change comes at a crucial time for HAL, as the company continues to expand its global footprint and plays a central role in India’s push for self-reliance in defence manufacturing under the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative.
HAL confirmed that Kota Ravi is not related to any board members and is not debarred from holding the office of director by any regulatory authority.

Who is Kota Ravi? HAL’s New CMD Profile
Kota Ravi is a veteran aerospace and defence professional with over 30 years of experience across manufacturing, operations, and electronics within HAL.
Education and Background
He is a Mechanical Engineering graduate from Malnad College of Engineering and holds advanced management credentials from IIM Ahmedabad and IAS Toulouse, France. His strong technical and managerial expertise has significantly contributed to HAL’s operational transformation.
Key Achievements and Contributions at HAL
Over his long career at HAL, including his role as Director (Operations), Kota Ravi has played a major role in strengthening India’s indigenous defence capabilities.
Major Contributions Include:
- Driving major defence contracts, including:
- 180 Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Tejas for the Indian Air Force
- 156 Light Combat Helicopters (LCH) for the Indian Army and Air Force
- Improving aircraft fleet serviceability through real-time data systems and customer-focused support initiatives
- Expanding indigenous manufacturing capabilities and increasing local content at HAL facilities, especially in Nashik
- Strengthening private-sector participation through outsourcing of key fuselage assemblies
- Diversifying HAL into civil aviation manufacturing and Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) services
He also serves as a Nominee Director at Multi-Role Transport Aircraft Ltd.
Strong Association with Tejas Programme
Kota Ravi is widely known in defence circles as HAL’s “LCA man” due to his long association with the Tejas Light Combat Aircraft programme.
He previously served as General Manager of HAL’s LCA division and was closely involved in:
- Production planning and execution of Tejas aircraft
- Operationalisation of the LCA fleet for the Indian Air Force
- Execution of the 83-aircraft Tejas Mk1A contract (2021)
However, HAL continues to work on completing deliveries of earlier orders, including pending aircraft under the original Mk1 programme, while scaling up production for Mk1A variants.

As CMD, Kota Ravi is expected to lead HAL into its next phase of growth with a strong focus on:
- Adoption of Artificial Intelligence and advanced technologies
- Improving operational efficiency and production timelines
