New Delhi: Hindustan Copper Limited (HCL), a state-owned copper producer under the Government of India, plans to invest more than ₹7,000 crore over the next five to six years to expand its operations through exploration, mine revival and strategic partnerships.
The company’s expansion strategy comes at a time when India’s demand for copper is rising, driven by infrastructure development, renewable energy, electric mobility and other clean-energy applications.
According to a regulatory filing, HCL has undertaken several strategic initiatives across the copper and critical minerals segments as part of its long-term growth strategy.
HCL Plans ₹7,000 Crore Investment Over 5-6 Years
Hindustan Copper plans to deploy more than ₹7,000 crore in capital expenditure over the coming five to six years.
The investment will focus on:
- Exploration of new copper and mineral resources
- Revival of closed and inactive mines
- Expansion of domestic mining operations
- Strategic partnerships in India and overseas
- Adoption of advanced mining and beneficiation technologies
- Strengthening the country’s domestic mineral security

HCL Adds 135.52 Million Tonnes to Resource Base
HCL said it has added 135.52 million tonnes of copper ore reserves and resources over the past three years, indicating a steady improvement in its resource base.
The company is also actively pursuing opportunities to acquire new copper deposits in India and overseas.
Hindustan Copper’s combined reserves and resources currently stand at 767.37 million tonnes, providing a significant resource base for its planned expansion.
Mine Revival a Key Focus for Hindustan Copper
Reopening closed mines across India is one of the key priorities under HCL’s expansion strategy.
The company aims to bring additional domestic copper resources into production and increase the availability of locally produced copper.
The move is particularly important as India’s copper requirements continue to increase due to the expansion of electricity infrastructure, renewable energy projects, electric vehicles and other emerging clean-energy technologies.
HCL Partners with Chile’s CODELCO
Hindustan Copper has also entered into a collaboration with CODELCO, Chile’s state-owned copper company.
The partnership is aimed at strengthening technical capabilities and sharing expertise in the copper mining sector.
