In a unique blend of strategic capability and cultural diplomacy, the Indian Air Force (IAF) successfully airlifted the sacred relics of Arahant Sariputta and Arahant Mahamoggallana, the chief disciples of Gautama Buddha, from India to Mongolia aboard its IL-76 strategic transport aircraft, Gajraj.
The special mission was undertaken on May 30 as part of India’s efforts to deepen cultural and civilizational ties with friendly nations, particularly those sharing a strong Buddhist heritage.

Sacred Relics Transported on Special IAF Mission
The revered relics were flown from New Delhi to Mongolia aboard the IAF’s heavy-lift IL-76 aircraft, one of the force’s most dependable strategic transport platforms.
The aircraft undertook an overnight flight and landed in Mongolia at approximately 11:25 AM IST, completing the mission safely and successfully.
The relics of Arahant Sariputta and Arahant Mahamoggallana hold immense significance in the Buddhist world, as both are regarded among the closest and most prominent disciples of Lord Buddha.
Boost to India-Mongolia Cultural Relations
The transportation of the sacred relics is seen as an important cultural outreach initiative aimed at strengthening people-to-people and spiritual connections between India and Mongolia.
Mongolia shares deep historical and religious links with Buddhism, and such exchanges are considered significant instruments of cultural diplomacy and international goodwill.
The visit of the relics is expected to attract thousands of devotees and reinforce the shared Buddhist heritage between the two countries.
IAF Supports National Objectives Beyond Defence
The mission once again highlighted the Indian Air Force’s ability to support national objectives beyond its traditional military role.
In recent years, the IAF has played a key role in humanitarian assistance, disaster relief, evacuation operations, medical missions and cultural outreach initiatives, both within India and abroad.
The successful execution of this mission demonstrates the versatility and operational readiness of the force in supporting government-led diplomatic and cultural engagements.
Symbol of India’s Global Cultural Outreach
Officials noted that the airlift reflects India’s commitment to promoting its rich civilizational heritage globally while strengthening relationships with partner nations through cultural and spiritual exchanges.
The mission stands as another example of how India’s defence assets are contributing not only to national security but also to the country’s broader diplomatic and cultural objectives on the international stage.
