Tokyo Paralympics silver medalist Suhas LY, an IAS officer of 2007 batch, won the men’s singles bronze medal in Australian Open. He showed his brilliant performance in the International Para Badminton tournament held in Mandurah, Perth, in Australia.
Mr. Suhas is currently posted in Sports Department of Uttar Pradesh as Secretary. He is India’s first IAS officer to win a medal at the Paralympics.
In this competition, Indian players won five gold, six silver and nine bronze medals.

He participated in SL-4 category. He reached till the semi-finals. Suhas LY, who has won medals in many international tournaments including Tokyo Paralympics, will participate in the Para Asian Games in China this month. Another explosive performance is expected from this legendary shuttler.
He defeated South Korea’s star player C. Nadan in straight sets 21-19, 21-15 in the quarter-finals and secured a place in the semi-finals. In the semi-finals, he had to settle for a bronze medal after losing to his own countryman Sukant Kadam 21-7,21-15.

A Computer Engineering graduate from the National Institute of Technology, Suratkal, Karnataka, Mr. Suhas has served as the District Magistrate of Gautam Buddh Nagar and Aazamgarh in UP. He hails from Karnataka and was born to late Yathiraj L K and Jayashree C S in Hassan, Karnataka.
Apart from being a famous IAS officer, he is also a well-known para badminton player. He has won many medals in international tournaments, including Tokyo Paralympic Games in 2021. He won the silver and bronze medal in the last two Para Olympics.
He became National Champion after winning gold medal in Men’s Singles category at second National Para Badminton Championships held at Varanasi in March 2018.
He is the only IAS officer in India to win a Paralympic medal and an Arjuna Award. His ranking is number one in the country. He is the number two player in the world.
He is also preparing for the Para Olympics to be held next year. He aims to win a gold medal for the country in the upcoming Para Olympics.
He has been honored with the Laxman Award by UP government.
He also holds distinctive record for winning many awards while serving in his official capacity. He has been awarded for his performances by Governor of Uttar Pradesh for his duties related to elections, by Revenue Minister and Chairman, Board of Revenue for duties regarding revenue administration.
