Bhopal: The Indian Navy inaugurated its premier Naval Sailing Node at Upper Lake (Bhojtal) in Bhopal, marking a significant step in strengthening watermanship training and promoting competitive water sports in India.
The inauguration ceremony was presided over by Chief of the Naval Staff Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi, in the presence of senior officials from the armed forces, civil administration, NCC cadets and students.
Grand Sailing Parade Showcases Naval Skills
To mark the occasion, more than 30 naval personnel from the Indian Naval Watermanship Training Centre (INWTC), Visakhapatnam, along with Navy rowing, kayaking and canoeing teams, conducted a spectacular sail parade.

The event also featured live demonstrations of:
- Kayaking
- Canoeing
- Rowing
The displays highlighted the Navy’s strong focus on discipline, endurance and teamwork in water-based operations.

Boost to Watermanship Training and Naval Excellence
Watermanship training has long been a core component of the Indian Navy’s training framework, designed to:
- Build operational endurance
- Enhance teamwork and coordination
- Strengthen combat readiness in maritime environments
The newly developed Sailing Node at Bhojtal will serve as a dedicated hub for advanced training in these disciplines.
Multi-Use Facility for Navy and NCC
The state-of-the-art facility will be used by:
- Indian Navy Sailing Team
- Navy Rowing Team
- Navy Kayaking and Canoeing Teams
- National Cadet Corps (NCC)
Officials said the facility will significantly improve structured training opportunities for cadets and naval personnel alike.
Madhya Pradesh Emerging as a Water Sports Hub
At present, 17 out of 34 members of the Indian Navy Sailing Team are from Madhya Pradesh, highlighting the state’s growing contribution to water sports.
The Sailing Node is expected to:
- Encourage youth participation in water sports
- Promote sporting excellence in the region
- Inspire more candidates to join the defence forces

Aligned with National Sports Vision
The initiative supports the broader vision of the Government of India to develop world-class athletes capable of competing at:
- Olympic Games
- Asian Games
It also aligns with the objectives of the National Sports Policy, which focuses on expanding India’s talent pool and improving performance in competitive sports.
Strategic Step for Defence and Sports Development
Officials said the Bhopal Sailing Node represents a dual-purpose development—strengthening both defence preparedness and sports excellence through structured water-based training infrastructure.
The facility is expected to become a key training centre in central India in the coming years.
