The Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi (VBA) has nominated ex-IPS officer Mr. Abdur Rahman as the party’s candidate from Maharashtra’s Dhule constituency in their second list of candidates ahead of the LS Polls.
Dhule is close to the ex-IPS officer’s heart as he had served as the Superintendent of Police (SP) there between 2002 and 2004.
Mr. Rahman is a 1997-batch IPS officer of the Maharashtra cadre, who resigned from India’s premium police service in protest of the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) in 2019. Born on January 8, 1973, Mr. Rahman is a native of Bihar and is an alumnus of the prestigious IIT Kanpur, where he pursued a B. Tech degree. His exceptional academic prowess later became the cornerstone for his 19-year-long career in the civil services.
Mr. Rahman served in various capacities and made several bold decisions to maintain the rule of law and employed innovative ways to ensure optimum social welfare. He had served as the ASP of Latur (1999 to 2001), SP of Dhule (2002 to 2004), Commandant of the State Reserved Police Force, Nagpur (2005 to 2006), Principal of the Police Training School in Solapur (2008 to 2010), ACP of Pune (2012 to 2015), Dy IGP of Economic Offence Wing (CID) Crime (2016), and he resigned from service as Additional DGP in 2019.
During his term as the SP of Dhule, Mr. Rahman got the better of the notorious highway robbers through his strategic anti-dacoity operations along NH-3, NH-6, and NH-211. While serving as the Principal of the Police Training School in Solapur, Mr. Rahman took strong measures to foster a skilled and disciplined police force.
Mr. Abdur Rahman is also a recipient of coveted awards like the Mahatma Gandhi Peace Award (2008) and the Rajiv Gandhi Administrative Excellence Award (2008) from the government of Maharashtra for his role in establishing communal harmony, development of infrastructure, and welfarism. He also received the People’s Forum Award (2004) for introducing an innovative system of controlling traffic and the Special Service Medal (2012) of DGP for countering the Naxalite movement of Chandrapur and Yavatmal.
