Who is Justice Mahabir Singh Sindhu
Born on April 4, 1967, in Masudpur village of Haryana’s Hansi district (formerly Hisar), Mahabir Singh Sindhu came from a modest farming family. He completed his initial schooling at the local government high school in his native village. He then moved to Chandigarh to pursue higher studies, earning his LL.B. degree from Panjab University in 1992.
Legal Career at the Bar
Justice Sindhu was a first-generation lawyer in his family. After enrolling with the Bar Council of Punjab and Haryana in 1992, he established his legal practice primarily before the Punjab and Haryana High Court in Chandigarh. Over a span of 25 years as an advocate, he handled a wide spectrum of cases involving:

- Criminal Law
- Constitutional Law
- Service Laws
He was appointed to several prestigious state and federal law positions:
- 1999: Additional Central Government Standing Counsel.
- 2000: Additional Government Pleader for the Union Territory of Chandigarh.
- 2004–2008: Deputy Advocate General for Haryana.
- 2008–2009: Additional Advocate General for Punjab, and subsequently for Haryana.
He also represented various prominent public institutions, cooperative banks, and universities, such as the Haryana Public Service Commission and Kurukshetra University.
Judicial Tenure
Justice Sindhu was elevated to the bench of the Punjab and Haryana High Court as an Additional Judge on July 10, 2017. Recognizing his capabilities, he was confirmed as a Permanent Judge on December 3, 2018.
During his nearly nine-year tenure on the bench, he was highly regarded for his dedication and fairness in handling complex civil and criminal rosters. Beyond his court rulings, he actively took on administrative responsibilities for the district judiciary and served on key public welfare bodies, including the State Executive Committee for Persons with Disabilities. At the height of his career, he rose to become the third senior-most judge of the High Court.
Demise
Justice Mahabir Singh Sindhu passed away on June 28, 2026, at the age of 59, while undergoing treatment for a prolonged illness at Medanta Hospital in Gurugram. As a mark of respect to his memory and contribution to the judiciary, the Punjab and Haryana High Court, along with all subordinate district courts across Punjab, Haryana, and Chandigarh, suspended operations on June 29, 2026.
In accordance with his final wishes, he was cremated with full state honours in his own agricultural field in his native village of Masudpur. He is survived by his wife, Samta Sindhu, and his two children.
