- Total proposed area: around 227 hectares
- Covers: about 6.7% of total wetland area
- Legal status: To be notified under the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972
The decision has been approved by the state Cabinet, marking a strong policy move toward environmental protection.
Why Kharungpat Is Important
Kharungpat is considered an ecologically rich wetland, especially for birds.
- Around 69 bird species recorded in 2023
- Nearly 40% were migratory birds
- Important habitat for waterbirds and wetland ecosystems
However, a 2025 bird census showed a decline in migratory birds, which triggered concern among authorities and experts.
Reasons Behind Decline in Bird Population
Officials and experts have identified several causes:
- Loss of natural habitat
- Shrinking roosting areas
- Increased human disturbance
This decline highlighted the urgent need for conservation measures, leading to the sanctuary proposal.
Kharungpat Bird Sanctuary: Focus on Conservation and Eco-Tourism
The project is not only about protecting birds but also about creating sustainable growth.
- Development of eco-tourism infrastructure
- Formation of Eco-Development Committees
- Involvement of local communities
Authorities plan to make it a “people’s project”, combining conservation with livelihood opportunities.
Coordination with Central Government
The Manipur Forest Department will work closely with the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change to:
- Develop conservation projects
- Restore wetland ecosystems
- Improve bird habitats
This collaboration is expected to strengthen long-term environmental sustainability.
Bigger Environmental Significance
Wetlands like Kharungpat play a key role in maintaining ecological balance.
- Support migratory bird routes
- Help in water conservation
- Maintain biodiversity
Under global standards like the Ramsar Convention, wetlands supporting large bird populations are considered internationally important.
