In a moving farewell to a distinguished policing career spanning over three decades, Andhra Pradesh Road Safety Authority Chairman and Director General-rank IPS officer M. Pratap (1991 batch, Andhra Pradesh cadre) chose an extraordinary way to mark his retirement. Instead of a ceremonial farewell, the 1991-batch IPS officer cycled from the Andhra Pradesh Police Headquarters in Mangalagiri to Tenali, where he paid tribute to his late batchmate, IPS officer Umesh Chandra, by dedicating the police uniform he proudly wore throughout his 35 years of service.
The symbolic journey reflected not only Pratap’s deep personal bond with the slain officer but also served as a tribute to courage, sacrifice and the enduring values of public service.
A Farewell Unlike Any Other
On the final day of his service on June 30, 2026, Director General-rank IPS officer M. Pratap embarked on a symbolic cycling journey from the Andhra Pradesh DGP Headquarters in Mangalagiri to Tenali, where a statue of the late IPS officer Umesh Chandra stands.
Upon reaching the memorial, Pratap offered his police uniform—a uniform he had worn throughout his illustrious career—as a mark of respect to his late colleague and close friend.
The gesture transformed what could have been an ordinary retirement into a deeply emotional tribute remembered across the police fraternity.
Tribute to a Fallen Hero
The cycling ride was dedicated to IPS officer Umesh Chandra, one of Andhra Pradesh’s most respected police officers, who became synonymous with fearless policing.
Known for his uncompromising fight against:
- Naxal extremism
- Organised crime
- Criminal syndicates
Umesh Chandra earned immense respect within law enforcement circles before he was assassinated by Naxalites in 1999.
For Pratap, the ride symbolised not just remembrance but also the enduring friendship shared by two officers who entered the IPS together in the 1991 batch.
Police Personnel Join the Tribute
Several serving police officers voluntarily joined Pratap during portions of the cycling journey.
Their participation reflected the admiration both officers command within the police force and underscored the continuing legacy of Umesh Chandra’s sacrifice.
The event became a collective expression of respect for courage, integrity and lifelong dedication to public service.
A Journey from Humble Beginnings to DG Rank
M. Pratap’s own life story has long inspired young civil servants and police officers.
Born into a farming family, he spent his childhood helping his mother deliver milk before pursuing higher education through determination and academic excellence.
His educational qualifications include:
- B.Tech – Andhra University
- M.Tech – IIT Delhi
- MBA – The Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania
His remarkable rise from rural Andhra Pradesh to the rank of Director General of Police stands as one of the most inspiring journeys in Indian policing.

He has frequently credited his parents and teachers for shaping his values and career.
Before retiring, he visited his former teachers in Narasaraopet to seek their blessings, reflecting his humility despite reaching one of the highest ranks in the police service.
Political Pressure and Administrative Integrity
Colleagues describe Pratap as an officer who remained steadfast in upholding professional principles.
According to reports, while serving as Director General of Fire Services two years ago, he allegedly refused to yield to political pressure. Following this, he was shifted to the relatively low-profile post of Chairman of the Andhra Pradesh Road Safety Authority.
Despite the transfer, Pratap continued to discharge his responsibilities with the same commitment that characterised his entire career.
A Retirement Marked by Gratitude and Remembrance
Rather than celebrating personal achievements, M. Pratap chose to conclude his 35-year policing journey by honouring a colleague who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty.
His symbolic cycle ride from Mangalagiri to Tenali and the dedication of his police uniform to Umesh Chandra’s memorial served as a powerful reminder that the bonds forged in public service often extend far beyond retirement.
For many within the police fraternity, the gesture reflected the values that define the finest officers—courage, humility, loyalty and unwavering respect for those who gave their lives in the service of the nation.
