Bhopal: The Government of Madhya Pradesh has taken a major step toward promoting renewable energy in agriculture by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for Agro Solar PV development under an Indo-German collaboration. The agreement was signed in the presence of Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav at the Ministry in Bhopal.
The initiative aims to integrate solar energy production with agriculture, enabling farmers to generate additional income while continuing cultivation on the same land.
MoU Signed Between Renewable Energy Department and Indo-German Project
The MoU was signed between:
- Department of New and Renewable Energy, Madhya Pradesh
- Madhya Pradesh Urja Vikas Nigam Limited
- Indo-German Agrivoltaic Cooperation Project (IGCA), supported by the Government of Germany
The agreement focuses on developing a structured framework for agrivoltaics (Agri Solar PV systems) in the state.
Officials from the German Embassy, GIZ (German development agency), and agrivoltaic experts were also present during the signing ceremony.
What is Agro Solar PV (Agrivoltaics)?
Agrivoltaics is a modern system that combines:
- Agricultural farming
- Solar power generation on the same land
Under this model, solar panels are installed above or alongside crops, allowing:
- Continuous farming activity
- Renewable energy generation
- Improved land use efficiency
This dual-use approach reduces the need for additional land and supports sustainable rural development.
Key Benefits of the Agro Solar PV Initiative
The project is designed to provide multiple benefits, including:
- Additional income for farmers through solar energy production
- Efficient and optimal use of agricultural land
- Strengthening of food security
- Reduction in land disputes
- Promotion of climate-resilient farming practices
- Support for rural economic development
The government also plans to provide subsidies to farmers under the scheme, making participation more accessible and financially viable.
Farmer-Centric Model for Dual Income Generation
Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav highlighted that the initiative will act as a “double benefit model” for farmers.
Under this system:
- Farmers will continue traditional farming
- Solar panels will generate clean energy on the same land
- Farmers will earn additional income from energy production
- Land ownership will remain with farmers
This model is expected to enhance rural income and encourage sustainable agricultural practices.
Alignment with PM-KUSUM Scheme and Renewable Energy Goals
The initiative aligns with national renewable energy programs such as:
- PM-KUSUM Scheme
It aims to:
- Develop a structured agrivoltaic ecosystem in Madhya Pradesh
- Improve energy security in rural areas
- Increase farmer participation in renewable energy generation
- Support India’s clean energy transition goals
Technical and Institutional Support from German Partners
Under the Indo-German collaboration, GIZ and partner organizations will support Madhya Pradesh in:
- Identification of suitable agrivoltaic project sites
- Technical and financial feasibility studies
- System design and implementation planning
- Capacity building for farmers and stakeholders
- Awareness programs for FPOs, developers, and DISCOMs
- Development of policy and regulatory frameworks
This collaboration will help ensure scientific planning and efficient execution of agro solar projects.
Focus on Training and Stakeholder Engagement
The project will also involve training and awareness programs for:
- Farmers and Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs)
- Energy developers
- Distribution companies (DISCOMs)
- Policy and implementation stakeholders
These programs aim to ensure smooth adoption of agrivoltaic systems across the state.
Long-Term Vision for Sustainable Rural Development
The MoU is a non-binding agreement valid until May 2030. It represents a long-term commitment to:
- Sustainable agriculture
- Renewable energy expansion
- Climate-resilient rural development
- Economic empowerment of farmers
Officials emphasized that the initiative will play a key role in transforming Madhya Pradesh into a model state for agrivoltaic innovation in India.
The Agro Solar PV MoU marks a significant milestone in Madhya Pradesh’s renewable energy journey. By combining agriculture with solar energy generation, the state aims to boost farmer income, improve land efficiency, and accelerate clean energy adoption through international collaboration.
