New Delhi: In a significant move aimed at improving commuter convenience and strengthening support infrastructure on India’s road network, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has directed the development of vehicle repair shops and puncture repair facilities at Wayside Amenities (WSAs) located along National Highways and Expressways.
The initiative, being implemented through National Highways Logistics Management Limited (NHLML), a wholly owned subsidiary of NHAI, seeks to enhance the overall travel experience, reduce vehicle downtime, improve road safety, and provide timely mechanical assistance to commuters and freight operators using the country’s expanding highway network.
NHLML Issues Directions to Wayside Amenity Operators
NHLML has instructed its field offices to advise lessees and concessionaires operating Wayside Amenities (WSAs) to prioritize the establishment of vehicle repair and puncture repair facilities at the earliest.
The move comes after observations that several National Highways and Expressways require a larger network of vehicle servicing points to cater to breakdowns, tyre-related emergencies, and other mechanical issues faced by travelers.
Officials believe that readily available repair services can significantly reduce inconvenience for highway users, prevent long delays during emergencies, and contribute to safer road travel.
Addressing Growing Need for Highway Assistance
With increasing traffic volumes on India’s highways and expressways, the demand for quick roadside assistance and vehicle maintenance services has grown substantially.
Vehicle breakdowns and tyre punctures often leave commuters stranded for extended periods, especially in remote stretches where repair facilities may not be easily accessible.
The proposed facilities are expected to provide:
- Timely mechanical assistance during breakdowns
- Quick puncture repair services
- Reduced travel delays
- Improved road safety
- Better support for commercial transport operators
- Enhanced commuter confidence during long-distance travel
The initiative is particularly expected to benefit freight operators, logistics companies, long-haul truck drivers, and private vehicle owners who frequently use national highway corridors.
Wayside Amenities Being Developed Under PPP Model
NHLML is currently developing a nationwide network of modern Wayside Amenities under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model.
These facilities are being established on long-term lease arrangements and are designed to serve as comprehensive service hubs for travelers.
Under existing lease agreements, concessionaires and lessees are permitted to develop several facilities beyond the mandatory amenities prescribed by NHAI.
Vehicle repair workshops and puncture repair centres are already included among the approved permissible facilities under the contractual framework, allowing operators to add these services without requiring major policy changes.
WSAs Emerging as Integrated Highway Service Hubs
The Wayside Amenities programme forms a key component of NHAI’s strategy to develop world-class highway infrastructure that extends beyond road construction.
These facilities are envisioned as integrated service centres offering a range of amenities such as:
- Fuel stations
- Restaurants and food courts
- Restrooms and sanitation facilities
- Parking spaces
- Rest areas for drivers
- Electric vehicle charging stations
- Medical assistance facilities
- Convenience stores
- Vehicle repair and maintenance services
The addition of repair and puncture facilities is expected to strengthen the role of WSAs as one-stop service destinations for both passengers and commercial vehicle operators.
Supporting Seamless Mobility and Logistics Efficiency
Officials noted that improving access to vehicle repair services aligns with the broader objective of ensuring seamless mobility across National Highways and Expressways.
India’s highway network plays a crucial role in the movement of goods and passengers, making uninterrupted operations essential for economic activity.
Prompt vehicle repairs can help reduce delays in freight movement, lower operational disruptions, and improve overall logistics efficiency.
The initiative also complements the government’s focus on enhancing ease of travel and building user-centric transportation infrastructure.
Strengthening Road Safety and User Convenience
The development of vehicle repair and puncture service facilities is expected to contribute significantly to road safety by minimizing the time stranded vehicles remain parked on highway shoulders, which often pose safety risks to other road users.
By ensuring quick access to technical assistance, NHAI aims to create a safer and more reliable highway ecosystem.
The initiative underscores the authority’s commitment to developing modern, commuter-friendly highway corridors that not only facilitate faster travel but also provide essential support services to meet the evolving needs of motorists and logistics operators.
As NHAI continues to expand India’s highway infrastructure, the integration of repair and maintenance services at Wayside Amenities is expected to further enhance the quality, safety, and convenience of road travel across the country.
