New Delhi: NITI Aayog has released a comprehensive report titled “Strategic Roadmap for Making Ayurveda Global”, outlining a phased strategy to expand Ayurveda’s global presence and position India as a leading hub for traditional medicine worldwide.
The report presents an in-depth assessment of Ayurveda’s current international footprint and provides a structured roadmap aligned with the vision of Viksit Bharat@2047.
Report Launched by Senior Leadership and Key Stakeholders
The report was formally launched by Vice Chairman NITI Aayog Dr. Ashok Kumar Lahiri, in the presence of:
- Prof. (Dr.) M. Srinivas, Member, NITI Aayog
- Vaidya Rajesh Kotecha, Secretary, Ministry of Ayush
- Senior officials from NITI Aayog, Ministry of Ayush, and Ministry of External Affairs
- Representatives from research bodies, industry associations, and other stakeholders
The initiative is expected to guide coordinated national efforts to promote Ayurveda globally.
Ayurveda as a Global Opportunity for India
Speaking at the launch, Dr. Ashok Kumar Lahiri emphasized that the global expansion of Ayurveda presents a major opportunity for India to:
- Become a global leader in traditional medicine
- Unlock economic value and employment generation
- Strengthen exports and industry growth
- Enhance India’s cultural and knowledge-based soft power
He stressed that achieving this vision will require a whole-of-government approach with coordinated and time-bound implementation.
Focus on Health Outcomes and Global Well-Being
Prof. (Dr.) M. Srinivas highlighted that the globalisation of Ayurveda goes beyond trade and market expansion. He stated that its core objective is to:
- Improve global health outcomes
- Offer evidence-based healthcare options worldwide
- Advance the philosophy of “सर्वे भवन्तु सुखिनः” (May all be happy and healthy)
This reflects Ayurveda’s role in contributing to holistic and preventive healthcare systems globally.
Ministry of Ayush Highlights Global Progress
Vaidya Rajesh Kotecha, Secretary, Ministry of Ayush, underlined the major initiatives taken by the government over the past decade to promote Ayurveda internationally.
He noted that:
- Ayurveda has gained increasing global acceptance
- International collaborations have expanded
- The new report will further strengthen ongoing efforts
- It will help position Ayurveda as a globally recognized healthcare system

Mr. Acquino Vimal, Additional Secretary (UNES), Ministry of External Affairs, highlighted the role of India’s international partnerships in promoting Ayurveda across global platforms.
He said diplomatic engagement and global cooperation have significantly contributed to Ayurveda’s growing international visibility.
Study Backed by Extensive Research and Stakeholder Consultation
The report was prepared by the Health Division of NITI Aayog in collaboration with PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC).
It is based on:
- Extensive stakeholder consultations
- International benchmarking studies
- Evidence-based analysis
The study identifies key opportunities and challenges in scaling Ayurveda globally.
Three-Pillar Framework for Global Expansion
The roadmap is built on a structured three-pillar framework:
1. Availability
Focus areas include:
- Globalized Ayurveda practice and workforce
- Expansion of exports and manufacturing
- International R&D collaboration
- Standardized global education systems
2. Acceptability
Focus areas include:
- Regulatory compliance and global guidelines
- Academic and industry collaborations
- Insurance coverage integration
- Cultural and regional adaptation
3. Propagation
Focus areas include:
- Strategic global branding
- International promotion and visibility
- Medical value travel
- Participation in global health institutions
Phased Strategy Up to 2047
The report proposes a long-term phased roadmap extending to 2047, aligned with the vision of a developed India under Viksit Bharat@2047.
