New Delhi: India’s clean energy transition received a major boost as NLC India Limited and the Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on 25 May 2026 to explore the formation of a joint venture (JV) for developing nuclear power projects in the country.
The proposed collaboration focuses on building 700 MW Pressurised Heavy Water Reactor (PHWR)-based nuclear power projects, strengthening India’s long-term energy security while supporting its Net Zero carbon emissions targets.
Key Highlights of the Agreement
The MoU outlines a strategic framework for cooperation between the two public sector enterprises:
- Formation of a joint venture to develop 700 MW PHWR-based nuclear power plants
- Exploration of advanced reactor technologies based on mutual agreement
- Potential investment participation in NPCIL’s existing and upcoming nuclear projects
- Strengthening India’s base-load electricity supply through reliable nuclear energy
Strategic Push Toward India’s Net Zero and Energy Security Goals
The partnership aligns with India’s long-term vision of achieving 100 GW nuclear power capacity by 2047, a key milestone in the country’s broader climate and energy strategy.
It is also expected to support industrial expansion by providing stable, low-carbon, and continuous power, which is essential for balancing renewable energy variability.
The initiative gains further significance following policy reforms under the SHANTI Bill (Sustainable Harnessing and Advancement of Nuclear Energy for Transforming India), enacted in December 2025, which modernized India’s nuclear energy regulatory framework and encouraged greater collaboration in the sector.
Leadership Vision Behind the Collaboration
According to senior leadership from both organizations, the partnership represents a significant step in building a stronger clean energy ecosystem in India.
The collaboration is expected to combine:
- NLC India’s diversified experience in power generation and growing renewable energy portfolio
- NPCIL’s established expertise in safe, large-scale nuclear power plant operations
Together, the proposed JV aims to deliver reliable, sustainable, and round-the-clock electricity to meet India’s rapidly increasing energy demand.
