NTPC to Submit First Nuclear Power Plant Feasibility Report as India Targets 100 GW Nuclear Capacity by 2047

State-owned NTPC advances major nuclear expansion plan with projects across multiple states, aiming to boost clean energy output and strengthen India’s energy security and self-reliance.

New Delhi: India’s state-owned energy major NTPC Limited is set to submit the feasibility report for its first nuclear power plant to the Centre soon. This marks a significant step in India’s long-term strategy to expand its nuclear energy capacity from the current 9 GW to 100 GW by 2047.

Feasibility Study Completed in One State, More Projects Underway

Officials confirmed that NTPC has completed a feasibility study in one of the 14 identified states for nuclear expansion. Studies are also underway in at least two additional states as part of its phased development plan.

The completed report will be submitted to the Atomic Energy Commission for approval before progressing toward land acquisition and project execution.

Bihar’s Banka District Among Key Identified Sites

NTPC has identified land in Bihar’s Banka district, where it has already received state government approval to prepare a detailed project report.

The company is evaluating multiple locations across India for nuclear power development in states such as:

  • Gujarat
  • Andhra Pradesh
  • Maharashtra
  • Madhya Pradesh
  • Chhattisgarh
  • Odisha

Massive Nuclear Expansion Roadmap

NTPC aims to develop around 30 GW of nuclear power capacity across 14 states by 2047. The near-term target is to achieve at least 2 GW capacity by 2032.

Each project site may include 2 to 4 nuclear reactor units depending on feasibility and land availability.

Project Cost, Capacity, and Technical Details

Officials shared key technical and financial details:

  • Each nuclear unit will generate around 700 MW
  • Estimated cost per unit: ₹20,000 crore
  • Water requirement: approximately 5 litres per unit of nuclear power
  • Land requirement varies based on plant size and design

Regulatory Approval Process

Proposals are reviewed by the Department of Atomic Energy’s site selection committee. Once cleared, they are forwarded to the Atomic Energy Commission for final approval before implementation.
