New Delhi: NTPC Limited has awarded additional Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) capacity under its ongoing 2.67 GWh tender, aimed at strengthening grid stability and modernising India’s power infrastructure through large-scale energy storage deployment at thermal power stations.
570 MWh and 1 GWh Projects Awarded
In the latest allocation, NTPC has awarded:
- 570 MWh BESS capacity to Pratap Technocrats Pvt Ltd
- 1 GWh BESS capacity to SPML Infra Limited
These projects are part of NTPC’s broader strategy to integrate battery storage with conventional thermal generation assets.

Multi-Location Deployment Across Key Power Stations
Pratap Technocrats Projects
Pratap Technocrats will deploy 570 MWh BESS capacity across two major plants:
- Gadarwara Super Thermal Power Station – 320 MWh
- Khargone Super Thermal Power Station – 250 MWh
These systems are designed to support peak load management and improve overall grid stability.
SPML Infra Project at Barauni
SPML Infra has secured a 1 GWh BESS project at the Barauni Thermal Power Station in Bihar, with a contract value of around ₹1,128 crore.
This marks the company’s entry into large-scale grid-connected energy storage in partnership with NTPC.
Project Scope and Execution Plan
The Barauni project includes end-to-end execution covering:
- Design and engineering
- Equipment supply and installation
- Commissioning and integration
It will feature:
- Advanced Battery Management System (BMS)
- Thermal Management System (TMS)
- 33 kV panels and high-voltage cabling
- 220 kV switchyard infrastructure
The execution timeline is 18 months, followed by 15 years of operations and maintenance.
Strengthening India’s Energy Transition
The 2.67 GWh BESS program spans seven thermal power stations and is aimed at:
- Improving peak demand management
- Enhancing grid reliability
- Supporting renewable energy integration
- Reducing dependency on fossil fuel-based balancing
Battery storage is becoming a key enabler for managing intermittent solar and wind energy in India’s evolving power sector.
Earlier Award at Unchahar
As part of the same initiative, NTPC earlier awarded a 50 MW / 100 MWh BESS project at the Feroze Gandhi Unchahar Thermal Power Station in Uttar Pradesh to SolarWorld Energy, further expanding its storage portfolio.
