Financial Support for Crop Loss
PMFBY aims to protect farmers from financial losses caused by crop damage. The scheme is designed to support farm income and encourage farmers to continue cultivation even after crop losses.
Farmers pay only a fixed portion of the insurance premium:
- Kharif crops: 2% of the insured amount
- Rabi crops: 1.5%
- Commercial and horticultural crops: 5%
The remaining premium is shared equally by the Central and state governments.

Technology to Assess Crop Damage
Technology will play an important role in Bihar’s implementation of the scheme.
Drones, remote sensing and satellite imagery will be used to improve crop-loss assessment. These tools are expected to make damage assessment more accurate and help speed up the claim settlement process.
The scheme provides compensation based on applicable provisions and the insured crop and area.
Central PMU Team Conducts Training
The Cooperation Department had requested the Union Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare to provide training for officials.
Members of the Central PMU team, Anil Pant and Mehul Kakkar, conducted the training and explained the operational and technical aspects of PMFBY.
Multiple Departments Join Training
The programme brought together officials and representatives involved in agriculture, insurance, disaster management and crop-loss assessment.
Divisional joint registrars, district cooperative officers and managing directors participated in the training.
Representatives from the Agriculture Department, Disaster Management Department, Finance Department, Directorate of Economics and Statistics, NABARD, BIRSAC, Agriculture Insurance Company of India and NIC also attended.
Senior officials from the Cooperation Department and Bihar State Cooperative Bank shared their views on effective implementation.
