Bhopal: Madhya Pradesh has received a major railway connectivity boost with the inauguration of the 56-km Kailaras–Sabalgarh–Veerpur railway section and the extension of the Gwalior–Kailaras MEMU train to Veerpur. Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav joined the programme virtually along with Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw and Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia.
The new railway link is expected to benefit hundreds of villages across the Gwalior-Chambal region by improving access to education, healthcare, employment and markets. The project also forms part of the larger expansion of railway infrastructure underway across Madhya Pradesh.
New Rail Link to Strengthen Gwalior-Chambal Connectivity
Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav said railways have a deep historical connection with Gwalior and highlighted the rapid expansion of railway infrastructure in the country.
He said Madhya Pradesh currently has railway projects worth more than ₹1 lakh crore under implementation. Among the major projects is the approximately ₹18,000-crore Indore–Manmad railway line, which will create a new rail route connecting the Malwa region and Guna with Mumbai.
The project is also expected to support industrial development in the Malwa and Chambal regions, including the Defence Corridor and Telecom Manufacturing Zone.
Dr. Yadav stressed that reliable connectivity is essential for industrial growth. Projects such as battery storage, a footwear cluster and a hydrogen manufacturing unit in the Gwalior region are expected to create new employment opportunities for young people.
Gwalior–Sheopur Rail Connectivity Moving Forward
Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said the newly inaugurated 56-km section will provide rail access to hundreds of villages in the Gwalior-Chambal region.
The railway project was approved in 2011, while construction began in 2016. According to the minister, railway services are now operating across a total stretch of 117 km.
Work is also progressing on the remaining sections towards Sheopurkalan. Around 95% of the work on the 37-km Veerpur–Siroli Road section and the 33-km Siroli Road–Sheopurkalan section has been completed.
Train services between Gwalior and Sheopurkalan are expected to start within months, with the line planned for future extension to Kota, boosting education and industrial connectivity.

Madhya Pradesh Railway Budget Rises to ₹15,188 Crore
The Railway Minister said Madhya Pradesh’s railway budget has increased substantially, from ₹632 crore earlier to ₹15,188 crore currently.
He said railway investment in the state has reached around ₹1.55 lakh crore, while redevelopment work is underway at 80 stations. Madhya Pradesh has also received five Vande Bharat trains and seven Amrit Bharat Express services.
Several major railway infrastructure projects are progressing across the state, including additional railway lines on important routes such as Bhusawal–Khandwa, Ratlam–Nagda, Itarsi–Nagpur, Itarsi–Bhopal–Bina and Vadodara–Ratlam.
Railways Expanding Employment Opportunities
Vaishnaw said Indian Railways has provided jobs to 5.54 lakh young people since 2014, with nearly half of its workforce joining after 2014. Around 3 crore candidates appeared for railway exams in the past 12–14 months.
Recruitment underway is expected to fill around 1.4 lakh posts. Vaishnaw also highlighted railway electrification and its role in reducing dependence on petrol and diesel, noting that around 704 crore passengers travel by rail.
Scindia Highlights Gwalior’s Railway Legacy
Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia called railway expansion a new phase of development for the Gwalior-Chambal region. The Gwalior–Kailaras service began in October 2024, with the line expected to reach Sheopur by December 2026.
The corridor currently serves 15–20 lakh people, with passenger numbers likely to rise. Scindia also highlighted the Gwalior–Agra Super Expressway and upcoming Telecom Manufacturing Zone.
Rail Connectivity Could Boost Trade and Local Development
Madhya Pradesh Assembly Speaker Narendra Singh Tomar said the railway extension would benefit people living between Gwalior and Sheopur and create opportunities beyond passenger travel.
Improved rail connectivity can help local businesses move goods more efficiently, connect workers and students with larger urban centres and improve access to essential services.
The Kailaras–Sabalgarh–Veerpur section therefore represents more than an expansion of passenger rail services. As the remaining sections towards Sheopur and the proposed future extension towards Kota progress, the corridor could become an important transport link for the wider Gwalior-Chambal region.
