Gurugram: Power Grid Corporation of India Limited (POWERGRID), a Maharatna Central Public Sector Enterprise under the Ministry of Power, Government of India, has secured a landmark green loan worth JPY 80 billion from the Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC). The funding reinforces POWERGRID’s critical role in advancing India’s renewable energy transition and strengthening cross-border financial cooperation.
The loan agreement between POWERGRID and JBIC was signed on June 17, 2026.
Funding to Support Khavda–Nagpur HVDC Transmission Project
The green loan will be utilized to finance the Khavda–Nagpur High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) transmission project, a key infrastructure initiative aimed at enabling large-scale renewable energy integration into India’s national grid.
The project highlights the strategic partnership between POWERGRID and JBIC in developing robust transmission infrastructure essential for India’s clean energy goals.
Strengthening India–Japan Green Energy Collaboration
The collaboration between POWERGRID and JBIC underscores the growing financial and technological cooperation between India and Japan in the energy sector.
Headquartered in Tokyo, the Japan Bank for International Cooperation is a policy-based financial institution fully owned by the Government of Japan. Established in 1999, JBIC plays a key role in supporting international economic development by complementing private sector financing.
