Chandigarh, Punjab: In a landmark decision aimed at the welfare of soldiers, paramilitary personnel, police officers, and their families, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann has approved the formulation of a reservation policy for Agniveers under the Agnipath scheme. The move highlights the state government’s commitment to supporting those who have served the nation and ensuring their smooth reintegration into civilian life.
High-Level Committee Formed to Draft Reservation Policy
To implement the policy effectively, Chief Minister Mann has constituted a high-level committee comprising senior civil and police officials. The committee will design a comprehensive framework to provide Agniveers with reservation benefits in government jobs across various departments.
Chairing a recent meeting, CM Mann gave the proposal a theoretical nod and emphasized that the policy should be finalized within a fixed timeline. He stated, “Trained and disciplined youth must become an integral part of Punjab’s social and economic development.”
Focus on Comprehensive Rehabilitation of Agniveers
CM Mann highlighted that the policy framework should be developed with a broad perspective to ensure proper rehabilitation for Agniveers returning from national service. He stressed the importance of utilizing their skills effectively to benefit Punjab’s development.
Senior administrative officials, including Vikas Pratap, Bhavana Garg, Sumer Singh Gurjar, and S.S. Srivastava, have been tasked with preparing detailed recommendations on Agniveers’ recruitment and reservation criteria.
Agniveers’ Skills to Strengthen State Departments
The Chief Minister recognized the potential of Agniveers, noting that their disciplined training could be effectively employed in various state departments, including:
- Punjab Police
- Forest Services
- Firefighting Services
- Jail Departments
- Home Guard
- PESCO and other government sectors
He urged officials to finalize selection criteria promptly to ensure these skilled and disciplined youth contribute optimally to state services.

Highlighting Punjab’s historic role in safeguarding India’s unity and integrity, CM Mann said, “It is a matter of pride that Punjab, known as the nation’s breadbasket, is also recognized as the sword arm of India. The bravery, hard work, and entrepreneurship of Punjabis are acknowledged globally.”
The Chief Minister also reaffirmed the state government’s ongoing support for families of soldiers who have been martyred, providing ₹1 crore in financial assistance.
