New Delhi: On the occasion of Menstrual Hygiene Day, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta announced a series of major initiatives focused on improving student health, hygiene, and school infrastructure across the capital. The announcements aim to strengthen sanitation facilities, promote menstrual awareness, and upgrade basic amenities in government schools.
Focus on Menstrual Hygiene and Student Wellbeing
The Chief Minister emphasized the need to improve awareness and facilities related to menstrual health in schools. As part of the initiative, all Delhi schools will introduce structured menstrual hygiene awareness programmes for both boys and girls.
She also announced the establishment of “Menstruation Corners” and dedicated medical rooms in all schools. These spaces will ensure the availability of sanitary napkins, innerwear, and other essential hygiene products for students in emergency situations.
Additionally, the installation of sanitary pad vending machines in school washrooms will be expedited to improve accessibility and convenience for students.
Improved Sanitation and Infrastructure in Schools
Rekha Gupta announced that all Delhi schools will be equipped with clean and well-maintained toilets, along with regular hygiene awareness programmes.
The government will also focus on strengthening basic infrastructure, including repair and maintenance of school buildings, whitewashing, and overall facility upgrades to improve the learning environment.
HPV Vaccination Data and Student Development Programs
The Delhi government will collect school-wise data on HPV vaccination to ensure better monitoring of student health and preventive care.
Students from government schools will also be encouraged to participate in the “Houslon Ki Udaan” programme, aimed at supporting holistic development and boosting confidence among children.
Officials noted that HPV vaccination plays a crucial role in preventing cervical cancer and other related diseases in both males and females.
Toll-Free Helpline for Parents and Students
To improve communication between schools, parents, and the government, a dedicated toll-free helpline number will soon be launched. The number will be prominently displayed on school gates and walls, allowing students and parents to easily register complaints and share suggestions directly with the authorities.
Clean Drinking Water and Tree Plantation Drive
In view of rising temperatures, the government has decided to install RO water coolers in all schools to ensure access to clean drinking water for students. A large-scale tree plantation drive will also be conducted from June 5 to August across all schools as part of environmental conservation efforts.
Strengthening Delhi’s Education System
The Chief Minister said these initiatives are aimed at transforming Delhi’s education system by prioritizing student health, hygiene, and infrastructure development. The reforms are expected to create a safer, cleaner, and more supportive environment for students across government schools.
