New Delhi: The Indian Navy and Sri Lanka Navy have begun the 13th edition of their bilateral maritime exercise SLINEX-26 at Visakhapatnam, with the five-day exercise being conducted from September 17 to 21.
The exercise includes a Harbour Phase followed by a Sea Phase, with participating ships from both navies engaging in professional interactions, operational activities and exercises aimed at strengthening maritime cooperation.
Three Warships Take Part in SLINEX-26
The Indian Navy is participating with two indigenous warships, while the Sri Lanka Navy is represented by one vessel.

Participating ships are:
- INS Kavaratti — Indian Navy Anti-Submarine Warfare Corvette
- INS Jyoti — Indian Navy Fleet Tanker
- SLNS Sindurala — Sri Lanka Navy
The exercise is being conducted under the aegis of the Eastern Naval Command.
Harbour Phase Focuses on Professional Exchanges
The Harbour Phase began with an opening ceremony and reception onboard INS Kavaratti for the crew of SLNS Sindurala.
Activities during this phase include:
- Professional interactions between personnel
- Cross-deck visits
- Sharing of operational best practices
- Yoga and sporting activities
- Cultural exchanges
These activities are intended to promote greater understanding and cooperation between the two navies.
Sea Phase to Test Operational Interoperability
The Harbour Phase will be followed by the Sea Phase, where the participating navies will undertake coordinated activities at sea.
The Sea Phase will focus on:
- Enhancing operational synergy
- Improving interoperability
- Conducting coordinated maritime activities
- Strengthening practical cooperation between the two navies
SLINEX Has Evolved Since 2005
Conceptualised in 2005, SLINEX has developed into a regular platform for India-Sri Lanka maritime cooperation.
The exercise provides an opportunity for the two navies to enhance interoperability, mutual understanding and professional cooperation through both harbour-based interactions and activities at sea.
Exercise Aligned With India’s MAHASAGAR Vision
The Indian Navy said SLINEX-26 is aligned with India’s vision of MAHASAGAR and reinforces its commitment to a secure, stable and inclusive maritime environment.
The exercise also contributes to strengthening the long-standing maritime partnership between India and Sri Lanka.
