Dehradun: The Tourism and Forest Departments in Uttarakhand have announced a joint initiative to develop traditional “chhanis” (seasonal huts) located on trekking routes into modern eco-huts.
The project aims to strengthen eco-tourism while preserving Himalayan ecology and promoting sustainable rural livelihoods.
First Phase Development in Pauri Garhwal and Jaunsar Region
In the first phase, eco-huts will be developed at key trekking locations including:
- Doodhatoli–Binsar region in Pauri Garhwal
- Jhoolka Danda trek in Nagtthat, Jaunsar area of Dehradun District
After successful implementation, the model will be replicated across other trekking routes in the state.
Modern Facilities with Eco-Friendly Infrastructure
According to the Tourism Department, the eco-huts will be equipped with essential sustainable facilities such as:
- Bio-toilets
- Water treatment systems
- Waste management solutions
These features are designed to maintain cleanliness and protect forests and mountain ecosystems.
Youth-Led Operation to Create Rural Employment
Tourism Secretary Dhiraj Garbyal stated that the eco-huts will be operated by trained youth groups.
Key benefits include:
- Skill training for rural youth
- Local employment generation in villages
- Reduction in migration from hill regions
- Increased share of tourism revenue in local economy
The initiative also supports homestay subsidy schemes through the Uttarakhand Tourism Department.
Preservation of Himalayan Culture Through Chhanis
Traditional chhanis or “khark” are an integral part of Himalayan heritage. These temporary stone, wood, and grass structures are used by rural families during grazing seasons, typically from April to October.
They are located in alpine pastures and forests and play an important role in:
- Supporting livestock-based livelihoods
- Maintaining ecological balance
- Preserving traditional mountain lifestyles
Expansion Plan Under Eco-Tourism Vision
Officials stated that under the vision of Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, this pilot project will be expanded across all trekking routes in Uttarakhand.
Once successful, all traditional chhanis near trekking trails will be converted into eco-huts and homestay-style accommodations, strengthening the state’s eco-tourism ecosystem.
Strengthening Uttarakhand’s Eco-Tourism Economy
This initiative is seen as a major step in Uttarakhand’s eco-tourism policy, aiming to balance:
- Tourism development
- Environmental conservation
- Rural employment generation
It is expected to boost sustainable tourism while empowering local communities and preserving Himalayan biodiversity.
