Uttarakhand Forestry Training Academy (UFTA), one of India’s premier forestry training institutions, is undergoing a comprehensive transformation under the leadership of 2002 batch Indian Forest Service (IFS) officer of Uttarakhand cadre, Mr Sanjiv Chaturvedi, who assumed charge as Director on January 1, 2026.
Established in 1979 as part of the Uttar Pradesh Forest Department and now functioning under the Uttarakhand Forest Department, the academy has long served as a key training institution for Forest Range Officers, Foresters, Forest Guards, ministerial staff and representatives of Van Panchayats. The ongoing revamp aims to reposition UFTA as a national centre of excellence in forestry training and knowledge development.

A Premier Forestry Training Institution in Haldwani
Located in Haldwani, the academy is well connected by rail and road to major cities such as Dehradun and New Delhi.
The institution is headed by an Indian Forest Service (IFS) officer of the rank of Chief Conservator of Forests and is supported by Deputy Directors, Assistant Directors and other faculty members from both the Indian Forest Service and Provincial Forest Service.
UFTA features an extensive campus with:
- Administrative and academic blocks
- Trainee hostels and mess facilities

- Residential quarters for staff and faculty
The academy currently provides induction training to Forest Range Officers from states including Meghalaya, Mizoram, Chhattisgarh and Jammu and Kashmir.

UFTA’s mission is to train and develop forest officers, frontline staff, ministerial personnel and Van Panchayat representatives so they can contribute effectively to the advancement of the forestry sector through strong technical knowledge and professional excellence.

One of the most notable changes introduced under Sanjiv Chaturvedi is a case study-based learning module designed to make training more practical and field-oriented.

Green Initiative: Bicycles for Trainees
In a unique eco-friendly initiative launched in April 2026, trainee field staff are being gifted specially modified bicycles to support forest patrolling and reduce dependence on fossil fuels.
The initiative combines environmental sustainability with practical utility in field operations.
