Lucknow: Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath held a detailed review meeting of the Health and Medical Education departments, emphasizing that improvements in healthcare services must directly benefit the common citizen.
He directed officials to continuously upgrade treatment quality, diagnostics, medicines, and emergency services in government hospitals across the state.
Focus on Modernisation of Medical Education and Hospitals
CM Yogi stressed that medical education should not only expand institutions but also ensure the availability of trained doctors, specialists, and skilled healthcare workers.
He instructed:
- Adoption of modern technology in medical colleges
- Strengthening of super-speciality services
- Better human resource management
- Expansion of research-based healthcare systems
Massive Expansion in Health Infrastructure Across UP
The review highlighted the extensive healthcare network in the state, including:
- 108 district hospitals
- 106 specialised hospitals
- 976 community health centres
- 3,757 primary health centres
- 27,668 health sub-centres
In FY 2025–26, government facilities recorded:
- 26.41 crore OPD services
- 1.23 crore IPD admissions
- 24.33 crore pathology tests
Rapid Growth in Medical Colleges and Seats
The state has seen significant expansion in medical education:
- Medical colleges increased from 44 (2016–17) to 83 (2025–26)
- MBBS seats rose from 5,390 to 12,800
- PG seats increased from 1,344 to 5,067
- Super-speciality seats grew by nearly 165%
Officials said this expansion strengthens healthcare delivery and medical education capacity.
Expansion of Nursing Education and Workforce
Uttar Pradesh currently has:
- 652 nursing institutions
- Approximately 3.95 lakh registered nursing staff
Seat capacity in nursing programs such as ANM, GNM, and BSc Nursing has increased significantly, strengthening the healthcare workforce.
Ayushman Bharat Scheme Expands Healthcare Access
CM Yogi praised the impact of the Ayushman Bharat Yojana, calling it a major support system for poor and needy families.
Key updates:
- 6480 hospitals empanelled
- 96.75 lakh+ free treatments provided
- Faster claim settlement emphasized
He directed timely payments to hospitals to ensure uninterrupted patient care.
Digital Health and AI Integration in Healthcare
Under the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission, the state has made major progress:
- 15.28 crore ABHA IDs created
- 15.14 crore electronic health records linked
Hospitals are being integrated with digital systems like Hospital Information Systems and Lab Information Systems to improve efficiency.
Strong Push for Emergency and Critical Care Services
The government is expanding emergency healthcare infrastructure:
- 108 ambulance and ALS services improved
- 375 ALS ambulances operational
- 9.38 lakh patients referred
- Faster response time directed
CM emphasized reducing ambulance response time, noting that every minute is critical in emergencies.
Strict Instructions on Drug Quality and Hospital Supplies
CM Yogi issued strict directions regarding medicine quality:
- No medicines with less than 3-month expiry allowed
- Only quality-assured medicines to be supplied
- Continuous monitoring of hospital drug availability
Expansion of Advanced Medical Institutions
Key developments include:
- 1010-bed new hospital at Lohia Institute
- 500-bed pediatric centre at SGPGI
- Expansion of trauma and emergency networks (UPTEN)
- New cancer mission and ICU expansion under CARE-UP
Institutions like Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia Institute of Medical Sciences reported advanced procedures including robotic surgeries and kidney transplants.
Focus on Maternal and Child Healthcare
The Chief Minister emphasized reducing maternal and infant mortality rates through:
- Strengthening institutional deliveries
- Improved emergency care for pregnant women
- Better rural healthcare access
Strengthening TB Eradication and Public Health Campaigns
CM Yogi called for making TB elimination a mass movement, involving:
- Schools and colleges
- NGOs and community groups
Uttar Pradesh has already been recognized for its performance in the national TB-free campaign.
