New Delhi: The Delhi Police government vehicle use policy has been tightened after the department issued a new memorandum to reduce fuel consumption and avoid unnecessary spending.
The move comes after Prime Minister Narendra Modi appealed for austerity measures due to the current international fuel and energy situation.
Officials have been asked to reduce avoidable vehicle movement, optimize official transport, and promote fuel-efficient practices across all police units.
Details of Delhi Police Government Vehicle Use Policy
According to the memorandum issued by the Office of the Police Commissioner:
- All Delhi Police offices and units must reduce unnecessary vehicular movement.
- Government vehicles must be used in a more planned and economical manner.
- Vehicle deployment should be optimised to avoid fuel wastage.
- Supervisory officers have been directed to ensure strict implementation.
- The department aims to support the national effort to conserve fuel and reduce unnecessary expenditure.
The memorandum was issued in view of the “prevailing international situation” and the Centre’s broader austerity campaign.
Key Measures Introduced by Delhi Police
Reports suggest that Delhi Police has introduced several operational changes to reduce fuel consumption:
Vehicle Pooling
- Dak motorcycles and two-wheelers will now be pooled at police stations and units.
- Officers travelling to the same destination may share vehicles whenever possible.
Reduction in VIP Convoys
- VIP and VVIP convoy sizes are expected to be rationalised.
- Police officials have been instructed to cut excess vehicles in security movements.
Promotion of Virtual Meetings
- Routine meetings and coordination conferences are encouraged to shift online.
- Virtual communication is expected to reduce inter-unit travel and fuel use.
Push for Public Transport
The advisory also aligns with the government’s broader focus on public transport usage in Delhi, including metro and bus services.
Why the Government Is Taking These Steps
India is facing pressure from rising global energy prices and fuel supply concerns linked to international geopolitical tensions. The Centre has urged ministries and departments to adopt cost-saving and fuel-conservation measures.
Recently, Prime Minister Narendra Modi also reduced the size of his own convoy and promoted the use of electric vehicles in official movements.
Several state governments, including Maharashtra and Delhi, have also announced measures such as:
- Reduced ministerial convoys
- Work-from-home advisories
- Increased use of public transport
- Restrictions on non-essential travel
Impact of Delhi Police Government Vehicle Use Policy
The new policy is expected to:
- Reduce fuel expenses for the department
- Improve vehicle management efficiency
- Lower unnecessary road movement
- Support national fuel conservation goals
Experts believe such measures may also help reduce traffic congestion and emissions in urban areas like New Delhi.
