Patna: Bihar is set for a significant transformation in its road and highway infrastructure as the state government has prepared detailed project reports (DPRs) worth more than ₹15,000 crore for national highways, bypasses, and bridges. These proposals have been sent to the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways for final approval. Once cleared, construction work is expected to begin swiftly, significantly improving connectivity across the state.
Arwal–Bihar Sharif Highway Upgradation Plan
One of the most important proposals includes the widening and upgrading of the Arwal–Bihar Sharif road project.
- Total length: 89 km
- Estimated cost: ₹3,844.69 crore
- Status: DPR submitted to the central government
This corridor is expected to strengthen regional connectivity between Arwal and Bihar Sharif, improving trade and travel efficiency in the region.

NH-333A Corridor and Sati Ghat Bridge Project
Under the NH-333A corridor development, major work is planned between Barbigha and Panjwara, including multiple road packages and a key bridge project.
- Sati Ghat Bridge estimated cost: ₹974.37 crore
- Project scope: Road widening + bridge construction
This corridor aims to improve east–west connectivity across central Bihar.
Bypass Projects in Key Cities
The state has also proposed major bypass developments in several urban centers to ease traffic congestion:
- Bettiah
- Samastipur
- Aurangabad
Additionally, a new bypass and two bridges over the Kamla River are planned in Jaynagar with a combined investment of over ₹2,200 crore.
Railway Overbridge Projects to Ease Urban Traffic
To reduce congestion and improve safety, the government has also planned several railway overbridges (ROBs) in key towns:
- Dumraon
- Vikramganj
- Safiasarai
- Jehanabad
These ROBs are expected to significantly reduce traffic bottlenecks at railway crossings.
₹8,671 Crore Ram Janaki Marg Project
A major highlight is the proposed Ram Janaki Marg development:
- Route: Masrakh–Chakia–Bhitthamore
- Total length: 146 km
- Estimated cost: ₹8,671.80 crore
- Current status: Final DPR soon to be submitted
This project is expected to boost religious tourism and regional connectivity across northern Bihar.
Government’s Vision for Connectivity Boost
According to departmental secretary Pankaj Kumar Pal, the state is working in close coordination with the central government to ensure faster approvals and execution.
He confirmed that all technical objections raised by the ministry have been resolved in a time-bound manner, paving the way for swift project implementation.
With projects worth over ₹15,000 crore awaiting approval, Bihar is on the verge of a major infrastructure upgrade. Once implemented, these highways, bypasses, bridges, and corridors will significantly enhance mobility, reduce travel time, and strengthen economic activity across the state.
